Forums - Sony Discussion - Prediction: PS5 will run at 4k

Doesn't really matter, 8k TVs are available and 12k TV's are under way.
We'd need some massive architecure improvements in the next few years to get a console to play 4k 60fps for under $600. As well as better cooling solutions as that would take a toll on the gpu.

I don't think PS5's target resolution is going to be 4K and the same will probably apply to Microsoft too. It's probably going to be either 1080p again or 1440p. AAA developers are obsessed with trying to immerse the gamers and graphics is a big part of that so they'll be investing a lot of time on light transport simulation ...

Of all the console manufacturers that has the highest potential to target 4K I think it's Nintendo since they don't really care enough about matching industry technical standards. While they'll be adopting physically based shading like this generation the new HD twins are going to roll around with monte carlo based global illumination ...

I just bought a 4K samsung 50" with upscaling for $937.  By 2019 they won't even sell 1080p TVs anymore.

This prediction, nope.

At the very least, 1080p will be the budget TVs. You can still easily find 720p TVs on the market yet 1080p has been around for like a decade.

Sony, Samsung, Vizio, etc are all predominantly 4K with their 2015 (except for OLED). As you quoted - I paid $937 for a 2015 - 50" 4K Smart TV with upscaling. This was from Best Buy -- not some super steal.

Well as long as they can maintain a solid 30 fps i'll be happy but don't think it'll happen.

Depends on launch date.

PS3 to PS4 is some 8x jump (10x according to some devs). If PS4 to PS5 is about the same, which is to be expected if it launches in 2018/19 with this slow progression of node shrinking, then I don't see native 4k as option due to pixel count.

720p to 1080p is 2.25x more pixels, 1080p to 2160p is 4x more pixels. They would need much more than 8x jump to make up for resolution penalty and keep same relative jump as in 8th gen.

So, if they launch in 2018/19 with 8x jump, I can see anamorphic 2160p with good upscaler as an option.
If they wait bit longer, or something really changes and 7nm node is mature and relatively cheap, then sure, native 4K might be achievable at $400-$450 price.

As a little reminder, the PS3 and 360 launched 720p gaming when most people still using 480p TVs.

They're still selling HD Ready TV's. I'm sure they'll be selling Full HD TV's for quite a while longer. 1440P is their best option. People will with 1080P screens will get a massive performance and graphical ( due to increased Textures and so on ) increase over the PS4 and those with a 4K Tv will also enjoy a good bump in resolution from 1080P to 1440P. It's the best chocie for Sony when dealing with Performance, Graphics and Price.

1440p is a terrible option because all 1080p content will be upscaled and will lose quality. Nobody will buy a 1440p set that makes their 1080p movies look worse.

This resolutions are viable on PS monitors because they aren't mainly used for watching films, just content that can render at any resolution (games, apps, etc). For TVs, after 1080p we will have 4K and after that we will have 8K.

Again, my prediction of 1080p still being around as budget TVs is still very likely. But maybe 4K will be more common on the market.

I have a 55'' curved 4k... I am ready for the upgrade.

Ask stefl1504 for a sig, even if you don't need one.

ps4 can ouput at 4k but no one will do it in games because it is too expensive.

of course the ps5 will output at 4 but who knows if any game uses it. some indies probably will but AAA probably not.

I would be happy with a PS5 running at 1440P but with everything else graphically maxed out ( Textures etc. ) and running at a stable 60 FPS for most games. 4K television screens just aren't going to be a thing for a while and next gen consoles can do without outputting their games at that resolution.

Lol, i don't think so.
