Forums - Gaming Discussion - Metacritic stats by Gen 8 platform ** UPDATED **

Credit for the hard work, but there is only one problem, almost all of the multi-plats are mainly reviewed on PS4, which in most cases leaves it with the higher score ( see shovel knight, diablo 3 etc) and that can skew the results a bit. But I don't want to cherry pick and discredit your work as that is not your fault, you did a great job and nice insight on how PS4 has possibly the best games.

Have read a few comments over this gen where people have said platform X has the best games based on either the top 10 metacritic scores or top 20, thought I'd do an average of the total scores for each Gen 8 platform to see whats what.

Results are:

Wii U: 68.14% from 206 games

XB1: 70.64% from 223 games

PS4: 72.06% from 286 games

Personally I was surprised by both Nintendo and XB1 scores. Nintendo because I thought it would be higher given the calibre of Nintendo and the lower amount of shovelware this gen, and XB1 because its quite close to the PS4 despite known performance deficits especially in 3rd party games. PS4 comes out on top and with the most reviewed games, impressive despite being on the market a full year less than the Wii U.

Overall quite close despite the rhetoric that comes out sometimes, anyone else surprised?

The Wii U gets pushed down by its eShop titles, as there are not enough good titles to counterbalance the bad ones there, even with less shovelware than last gen. And the third party titles to counterbalance them are also not there anymore.

The Xbox titles don't get downgraded much for their lower visuals compared to the PS4 versions - if they get downgraded at all, as many sites and magazines give the same rating to all versions unless one is clearly different and only tell the difference in text or a comparision box. So, the low difference makes sense.

I hope that puts the rumors to rest that PS4 does not have the best games

PS4 games are usually reviewed higher, just look at Shovel Knight on PS4 vs. Wii U. Came out almost a year later yet it has 91% vs. 88% on Wii U.

And the PS4-version of Shovel Knight deserves the slightly higher score: it's cross-buy, so you only have to buy it once if you want to play it on your TV (PS4) and on the go (Vita). And you can fight Kratos.

While you have to pay it twice if you want to play it on your TV (Wii U) and on the go (3DS).

The Cross-buy does indeed increase the Value of the game, but doesn't change anything about it's Quality, which is what reviewers are nominally testing. So this shouldn't have any effect on it's metacritic.

And I doubt the fight with Kratos is worth 3 additional points, especially since the Wii U versions has it's own share of unique features.

I wouldn't say value has no bearing on a Metacritic score, again take Towerfall Ascension for example which had a score of 87%, do you think it would still get the same score if it was released at $60? Many high scoring indie games are given massive concessions in content due to their low price.

I'm surprised the Wii U is not #1.

But then again, a lot of the games on the PS4 are remastered games of high scored last gen games... soooooo

I did have a bit of a chuckle.

Quite strange. Maybe a lot of bad unknow games lowering wiiu score. If by publisher or developer they would score much better.

Yet with the PS4 having the most games it would be fair to assume that has even more bad/unknown games lowering the score...

Very true, and in the end far more good and bad games with greater variety

PS4 only 4% above Wii U, a console with last gen hardware.

Average percentage-wise, the difference isn't big but it's clear that the PS4 has a far better library based on quantity and quality.

Far more quality? x´D

Forget about indies and remasters and compare, even with all the multiplatforms Ps4 is still far from WiiU on quality.

It may just be me, but is there a reason that the percentages in the base tables don't add up to 100%?

Metacritic score PS4 Wii U XB1
> 90% 2.01% 1.94% 1.34%
> 80% 25.08% 22.82% 19.20%
> 70% 63.55% 54.85% 60.71%
> 60% 83.95% 74.27% 81.70%

By calculating the scores in this way you are double and triple counting the same scores, so a game with a score of 80-70 range will get counted for also a score of 70 -60 and below 60, won't it?

Why hate systems that bring you great games?
