Rodneybouch now hinting that Crytek is a possible acquisition for MS, I would welcome it since they are AAA and are in Financial trouble but the leadership of that team would need to change. So now the most likely pool of devs are 1. Hazelight 2.Armature 3.Asobo 4.Crytek

Crytek would literally be perfect for Microsoft.
Not only do they make pretty solid titles... But it would make Microsoft competitive in the high-end graphics department... Because whilst Halo and Gears can look pretty at times, it always felt Sony was a step ahead.

Ugh Crytek, please no. They're a mess leadership and development wise. They've sold most of their worthwhile IPs apart from Crysis and Ryse, which honestly Microsoft could just scoop up when they're in trouble again which won't take long and they only have two studios left. I'm pretty sure Crytek can't do anything with the Crysis IP without EA's permission too. I'd hate if they brought Crytek
Can't see them doing it for the engine either, Microsoft is all about Unreal Engine and outside of Unreal Engine they just make their own (T10/343)

Yeah. EA would hold the Crysis IP.
But... That doesn't mean that Crytek can't make another title in a similar vein... I mean, they made FarCry, which was open-world, island/foresty stuff just like Crysis and flogged it off to Ubisoft... And that is a bigger franchise than Crysis now.
Unreal Engine gets used far to much... And as a result allot of games start to feel "samey". - Which was a pronounced issue during the 7th gen IMHO.
At this point in time, Crytek should be pretty cheap to pick up... And would be a better option than building a new studio from the ground up.

My guess is that instead of using the current Cry Engine (because like you said, Cry Engine is less efficient and more difficult to develop for than Unreal 4), they would get the Crytek programmers together with some of the engine programmers from other 1st party studios like 343 and and Turn 10, and all of them together would design a new engine to replace Unreal 4 for the other 1st party studios that currently use Unreal 4 (Compulsion, Rare, Ninja Theory, Undead Labs, etc.). Just a thought of course, I have no idea if that is their intention at all. Just seems to me like MS probably doesn't like the thought of losing 10% of their revenue from more than half of their 1st party studios to Epic.
Also, I feel like The Coalition would stay on Unreal even if MS did design a new engine to replace Unreal 4, Unreal and Gears are synonymous, Gears with a different engine would just be weird.

CryEngine is arguably capable of more... But it's also a very PC-centric engine with some relatively high CPU overheads.
It needs more R&D sunk into it to bring it into the modern era... And with Microsoft's software engineering expertise, who better to turn that engine around?

Still don't like the idea, I can't see 343i or T10 changing their engine especially when they're in the process of hugely updating their own engine and whatever studios they have left are all hiring for UE4, It'd be a massive change to just swap them all over to CryEngine, adding more development cost and time which they shouldn't really mess around with right now.

343i wouldn't change engines.
T10 might later on if a better solution comes along, but Unreal works for them, Gears was originally designed to take advantage of the Unreal Engines various nuances and show it in the best possible light.

Their game engines are mostly good as they are right now apart from 343i's having some issues.

Halo Infinites SlipSpace engine is nothing to sneeze at... Which is why 343i will not change engines at this point.

I mean, didn't we hear about how much development trouble Andromeda had due to swapping to Frostbite with EA's goal of putting everything under one engine.

That wasn't the engines fault. Bioware had a B-grade team that went and stuffed up... Plus EA rushed things.
Frostbite wasn't Biowares first outing with that game engine either, that title belongs to Dragon Age: Inquisition... And that was an amazing RPG... So we can't blame Frostbite.
Plus... EA's approach has allowed EA games to have a certain degree of visual fidelity across the entire board... And it's paid off in my opinion.

Looks like Klobrille is now 100% certain that MS has acquired Obsidian. He was only at 75% certainty last week.

Obsidian is a perfect match for Microsoft in my opinion.
The only Criticism I would give about such an acquisition is that... The games will likely be Windows Store and Xbox exclusive. I hate Windows Store.
