Forums - Gaming Discussion - Good RPG's with bad/mediocre stories

Fallout New Vegas. You got shot. Got to find out who shot you and took your delivery package.

.... Really?

Leaving aside how that premise merely serves to insert your outside character into the real story of a regional stalemate between three major powers, what's wrong with a good old fashioned revenge plot? Do you think Hamlet and The Count of Monte Cristo are bad stories?

Main Pokemon games usually have a similar story mostly

If you compare it to the first parts of Fallout 3 its a huge letdown. I didn't care for it.

Monster Hunter , or every open world rpg that have a customize character.

Knights of Pen and Paper was pretty good without much of a story, and so was Rainbow Moon

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Almost every worthwhile RPG from before 1994 or so. Final Fantasy 4, for example, is my favorite game in the main series, but the story is ridiculous at points. The ensemble of protagonists is lovable, but only Cecil and maybe Kain have much depth, the setting is nothing special, and then you have the second half of the game, where they add two miniature world maps with recolors of old enemies. And the Zeromus thing.

Final Fantasy 4 was the first RPG I ever played! It's hard not for me to look at with rose-colored glasses. But I agree Cecil and Kain were really the only very memorable characters. I totally loved the game as a kid, but I do find it hard to go back to :(

The thing that really got me about FFIV was all the deus ex machina moments near the end. Half the playable characters appeared to commit suicide in order to help Cecil, and yet all of them except Tellah were miraculously rescured. :)

It would honestly be faster to ask which RPGs have good stories.

The Elder Scrolls series as a whole has never been very strong in the main story department. I love the series, but the main narratives are usually merely passable and serve as a skeleton that holds the actual meat of the game together.

Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning.

Fair point. I sunk about 100 hours into that game...the story just wasn't quite epic though.

But fuck I wish it had done well enough for a sequel.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Probably most recent Bethesda-Open-World-RPGs. Fallout 3, Skyrim.

Main Stories are pretty 'meh' but besides that they are still good RPGs. At least these two are the first I'm thinking of.
