Forums - Sony Discussion - So Why the Big Drop Off for PS4 in America NPD?

In both February and March PS4 sold more than 300k in America according to NPD.  IN the Month of May though it dropped down to 170k and lost to Xbox One.  So what exactly happened that made PS4 drop off so much?  Was it that there is no big games?  But then again Mortal Kombat X was one of the biggest releases this year.  Was it no big exclusives?  Has it peaked?  What is it?

Thoughts?

March is 5 weeks, and February is tax returns I believe.

If the real question is why did X1 pull off a surprise win, you can take your pick. PS4 reaching market saturation at $399, Batman bundle reducing sales, Halo MCC bundle picking up steam...

It might just be an adjustment. NPD doesn't retroactively adjust, they just add or subtract the numbers in any given month. We'll see next month.

Otherwise, perhaps the Batman bundles eating up current sales. In that case, sales will be low again next month.

A drop that steep is indeed odd, so I'd say it has to be one of these two.

^ Yes

I think it's because of a vacuum caused by the surprise success of Bloodborne and the preorders of the Batman Bundle.

The PS5 Exists.

Maybe it's time for a price drop.

No key game releases in April, The Batman Bundle ate some of the sales and a lot of people planning to buy a ps4 around this time just got it the week before when BloodBorne launched

xbox had amazing deals for 175 for old consoles upgrage but mcc bundles and its good pricing ps4 held on surprisingly well

February had The Order
March had Bloodborne

Also, the Xbox One saw some pretty big deals with Gen 7 trade ins, from what I have read on this NPD.

What is really surprising is that Mortal Kombat didnt really push the console despite the fantastic opening. Makes me wonder what The Witcher 3 will do for both Xbox One and PS4.
