Forums - Nintendo Discussion - When do you expect Nintendo to shut down Online services for WiiU?

I'm still playing Goldeneye 007 on Wii online so Wii U has years to go.....

So they closed down the Store as well?

Tbh with the upcoming unified platform I don't think it will be shut down as all platforms current gen and future will be using it essentially meaning platforms will be online as long as the unified platform is. Only difference is some hardware will have access to features others won't.

With games like splatoon, I think they are keeping it for their next console to, to expand it's life.

I'd say when the company's next console is released. So sooner rather than later. WiiU is a colossal failure when put up against Wii's success. But Wii's model never looked like a long term thing to me. Hence why I predicted WiiU's failure long ago. I'd love to be a Nintendo fanboy again but as of right now there's nothing in the industry that Nintendo is the leader in. Especially online!

PC GAMING: BEST GAMES. WORST CONTROLS

A mouse & keyboard are made for sending email and typing internet badassery. Not for playing video games!!!

In May 20 2014, Nintendo suspended the online services for Wii.
That's 7,5 years after Wii released.

Now it makes me wonder, if they suspended online services after 7,5 years for a console that sold 100m units, when can we expect them to shut it down for the WiiU? (Which has been out on the market for 2,5 years now.)

The idea came to mind as I'm thinking of getting a WiiU around the time Zelda comes out, which may be as late as November 2016.

Nintendo didn't shut down Wii online, GameSpy did.

Wii's online infrastructure was built on GameSpy which shut down last year.  Nintendo didn't have a choice.

The Wii U's online infrastructure is built on their own system and will likely never need to shut down unless Nintendo exists the platform business.

It depends on how they change their online setup between the WiiU and the NX. I doubt there will be that much of a difference. Since they will be setting up their new online service with the NX in mind they will probally patch the code for the Wii U to work with the new systems they put into place and the Wii U doesn't have as many specialized services that the Wii had (News channel, etc) I really do not see them ending the WiiU network support anytime soon, even after the release of the NX, it will more then likely die a "natural" death of user loss.

If they really cared they would have went to different servers......

2021

I thought Wii relied on Gamespy and that was why it shut down. It most likely would still be running Wii games if it did not shut down.
