The major Japanese retailer Tsutaya just released its weekly chart for the week between March 23rd and March 29th. Tsutaya’s charts are related only to the retailer itself, but they’re considered a quite good indicator of how the general Japanese market, due to the number of Tsutaya stores across the country.
This week was quite interesting, as it marked the debut of From Software’s PS4 exclusive Bloodborne. Surprisingly enough, it didn’t dominate as many (me included) expected:
- One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 – PS3
- Sword Art Online: Lost Song – PS Vita
- Bloodborne – PS4
- Sword Art Online: Lost Song – PS3
- One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 – PS Vita
- Theatrhythm: Dragon Quest – 3DS
- Pro Baseball Spirits 2015 – PS3
- One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 – PS4
- Pro Baseball Spirits 2015 – PS Vita
- Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – PS3
- Senran Kagura: Estival Versus – PS Vita
- Minecraft for PlayStation Vita – PS Vita
- Yakuza Zero – PS3
- Kuroko no Basket: Mirai e no Kizuna – 3DS
- Battlefield Hardline – PS4
- Disgaea 5 – PS4
- Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth – PS Vita
- Battlefield Hardline – PS3
- Resident Evil: Revelations 2 – PS4
- Final Fantasy Type-0 HD – PS4
While Bloodborne did not come out on top, it definitely had some strong contenders in One Piece and Sword Art Online, which are part of two of the biggest anime franchises of the past few years.
That said, it’s also relevant to mention that the PS4’s installed base is much smaller than the PS3’s and the Vita’s, and PS4 gamers in Japan seem to be more inclined to purchase games digitally lately, and digital sales aren’t obviously counted by Tsutaya’s charts.
Incidentally, I haven’t seen Tsutaya’s chart so utterly ruled by PlayStation games in like… forever. 3DS games managed to grab only two spots in twenty.
We’ll get a more precise view of last week’s Japanese sales on Wednesday, when Media Create will reveal its top 20. Will Bloodborne make a comeback, or maybe it’ll still be overwhelmed by the Anime onslaught?
The PS5 Exists.
