On the point of remasters. We started getting them around mid last gen (and they were titles of the previous gen). For most developers and studios, this was a newly discovered money maker. So going into this gen, it's now a thing that exists from the start (and of games released last gen). So it's not some new problem per se. If you have a problem with remasters today, you should have had a problem with them last gen. Generally, they were positively received.

However, it's not static; we use to get collections and now we get single remastered games. Granted that the remasters released today were late last-gen titles so it makes sense to be released on their own as they are still relatively new. For older games getting remasters, we perhaps have a case of this getting steered into the most cash grabbing sense. We saw this with DLC over the years, including last gen.

Nope, they started long before that. I remember playing the Final Fantasy 4/5 re-release on PS1.

True, but I was getting at the current issue with remasters.

This is in response to the OP... what you have to understand about this generation is that the cost of making AAA games has exploded and companies are scrambling for ways to stay profitable. Several have already dropped out. Think about how many publishers there used to be and now there's just a few, and they're afraid to take risks. Look at how Square Enix said they lost money on Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Sleeping Dogs even though they all sold close to 10 million copies each. That's what's crazy and it's what led them to doing the "remastered" versions.

With fewer publishers and with higher budgets come less games. That's just the sad fact of it. The good thing is that we're in a renaissance of independent games. There are more great games being put as downloadable titles that do do new things and innovate. You just have to know where to look.

What I'm looking forward to in this gen is Virtual Reality. That's where PS4 will really set itself apart.

Additionally, with higher budgets comes less risk. I think this is what is harming the gen the most, and it is why we will likely see few new IPs which actually do anything remotely risky. So far, the main new IPs were working off of established formulas, such as Bloodborne working off of Souls, Watch Dogs working off of every open world game etc....

I would take this gen over Magnavox Odyssey and the millions of Pong Clones of the mid 70s

Man...the generation ain't over yet. It ain't over until Iwata is forced to get a wig.

My only problem with remasters are the games that are getting remastered. I would have no issues if it were a game that was more than 5 years old, preferably a game that's 10 years old or older, but a game that came out a year or two ago? That's insane.

That seems to be the issue for most people. An HD remaster of a game that is already in HD doesn't make much sense to me.

Makes me wonder, if fans weren't so picky about resolution and FPS at the start of this generation, would we be seeing as many remasters.

I don't think you know what facts are and how they work. And of course, Nintendo is the lord and savior of this gen. Really didn't see that coming the minute I saw it was your thread. I'll come back and post in more detail but just you know, I strongly disagree.

I'll give my take when the 9th generation consoles start coming out, for now I'm just gonna wait and see what happens

this generation is automatically the worst due to non competing nintendo home console, combined with a weaker xbox debut......

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

This is what I'm thinking x}

OT: If Wii motes and glasses free 3D are what makes a good generation I'll happily have 100 bad generations.
