After talking with StarOcean, who so graciously decided to hand over the immense responsibility of maintaining a rumors and speculation and news thread, I have taken control of this battlestation.

I will be re-editting this thread tomorrow to best include any new ideas and related threads as I can.

Henceforth, this will be a place where your ideas and your threads will be on the spotlight.
Remember, that this is a place for discussion of news, rumors, and speculation. Everything should be treated as such, and lets have respect for all individuals and their ideas no matter how wacky their subscription service theories sound :D

Starting tomorrow, I will be collecting various news sources and updating the OP to reflect that.

Thank you in advance :D

Note by StarOcean

So me and prof here had a discussion and he's willing to take responsibility for the Official NX Discussion thread, which works for me as I don't want to deal with all of the stuff involved anyway XD However, he's adopting the rules of the other NX thread which is of the following:

-Any future NX threads will be locked and linked to this one. If a patent is found, fine, make a thread over it. However any discussion about it following will be here (unless you post it/request it be put in General Discussion)

-The only exception to this rule is if we get actual information, not a rumor, not a "My dads friends best friend who knows a guy who knows a girl who overheard 2 businessmen who said they heard from a Nintendo Insider at a local strip club, etc", NONE OF THAT

-Once the NX gets an official name and Nintendo officially shows it, you can make as many threads to your hearts desire about it. For now, this will have to do

TO RECAP:

-You can only make NX threads that give real information about the system which means no more rumors or random topics about the system

-Any that are posted will be locked and redirected here (or if you really want you can post it to General Discussion)

-You can read, just look at the OP you lazy thing  XD

ENJOY AND GOODLUCK!

`Added by StarOcean (btw prof, if you want to reword the rules so it sounds more like you, you can. Just make sure the meaning of the rules does not change.) Good luck, prof, you're gonna need it...

NEWS:

Nintendo joins Khronos in September, will help development of Vulkan's API for release at the end of 2015. The NX will most definitely use this to have amazing GPU/CPU performance by getting the most out of each chip.

Not sure if you guys realized this but this means the NX will be able to run basically any modern High End Graphics Engine that is currently available with great results.

I also read that Sony could adopt a form of Vulkan to work with the PS4, but Open GL probably is best suited for it. The NX is forward thinking for Nintendo thanks to them partnering with Khronos. The console will be able to run any engine a developer can throw at it and is not so limited as DX12 is since it's exclusive to Windows 10.

If the 2DS gets included as a different portable then the New 3DS should too, not to mention all the XL portables.

Also, the DS Lite, Gameboy Pocket, and Gameboy Micro.

A replacement 3DS is the most straight forward idea and makes the most sense

But some kind of streaming device doesn't sound too implausible. Maybe it has loads of streaming capabilities to assist the future Wii 3 (or whatever)?

Or maybe it's somehow a replacement for both? 3DS came out in 2011 and Wii U in 2012. 2016 replacements would be on the shorter end of the expected life cycles, but it's not impossible

The only question with the replacement bit would be, "why recently develop and release a new 3ds with new functionality if it's going to be replaced in a year"

X = Cross-over

It means WiiU and 3DS will have some software connection to each other

Also, some news I read before state that 3DS have a streaming feature for Wii U game

Well they're going to talk about it in 2016, doesn't mean it's going to come out in 2016. If we say it comes out in early 2017, then the new 3DS got a solid 2 1/4 years in Japan, which isn't unreasonable.

I previously, and still do, believe that Nintendo could release a tablet that would function as a 3ds and also work as a controller for the wiiU. Your post does kind of push my thoughts more in that direction.

I could see Nintendo trying to implement a similar strategy as Apple has with iPod/iPhone/iPad/Apple TV. So maybe 3 different handheld skus and a TV version with slightly different power levels but all able to play the same games just at different graphic settings. For example

NX Mini-4 inch, 480p screen, $149.99
NX Portable-5 inch, 720p screen, $199.99
NX Plus-6 inch 1080p screen, $249.99
NX TV-1080p, $199.99

Then after 3 years do upgrades to them, Mini-720p, Portable-1080p, Plus/TV-4k. Another upgrade 3 years later to Mini-1080p, Portable-4k, Plus/TV-8k.

By the time that final upgrade has its 3 years, we're looking at a decade from now so who knows what gaming will be like then.
