Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo is still against annual franchises

A lot of video game franchises these days are currently annual such as Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says that the company is still against this tradition. For instance Fils-Aime says with something like Mario Kart there will only be one entry for the Wii U and the next game would be on future hardware. Reggie also hopes that the video games we are playing today on our Wii U consoles will be cherished into the future.

The company won’t overuse its old games, though, Fils-Aime said. Nintendo won’t follow in the same steps of games like Call of Duty, releasing a new iteration every year, he said. “We put out one Mario Kart per platform per generation.”

That strategy has led many Nintendo fans to hold on to their decades-old game consoles to replay their favorites. What’s unclear is whether the Wii U will be as equally loved decades from now.

“We certainly hope so,” Fils-Aime said. “And in the end it’s going to be placed on our ability to have these unique compelling experiences that stand up to time.”

Good cause annual franchises give me franchise fatigue

Pokemon is annual... but I guess it technically isn't completely under Nintendo

This.

"Just for comparison Uncharted 4 was 20x bigger than Splatoon 2. This shows the huge difference between Sony's first-party games and Nintendo's first-party games."

Zelda and Pokemon are both annual franchises. I'd even say that Mario is, but then you'd be going into semantics. Hell, Zelda releases two games a year sometimes. Don't know what the guy is talking about.

EDIT: And don't get me wrong, I love that they are annual. I can't wait more than a year for my next Zelda/Mario/Pokemon fix.

What Zelda game released last year, 2012, and 2010? It seems like Zelda is an every other year series to me. And that is only if we include remakes.

It's nice to see at least someone is still against overly excessive milking. Not that Nintendo is that great either, but still better than annual franchises.

Well, at least I have more choice on non-Nintendo platforms. That includes more original ideas as well.
