Forums - Gaming Discussion - What game/s brought back QTE's???

Hey there,

We all know Quick-time-events were around way back in the early 80s(Dragon's Lair...) and then it's usage was diminished for some time after. My earliest recollection of QTE's coming back was in the first Shenmue. I remember reading Gamer's Republic(RIP, such an awesome magazine) where they previewed Shenmue and even they were dismissive about the QTE's and hoped it would be minimal. Since then we have seen games use it extensively, mainly Resident Evil 4/5/6, Heavy Rain etc. Was Shenmue the game that brought back the dreaded QTE's from their slumber? What game/s rekindled QTE's?

i'm sure the order 1886 is to blame..

Die Hard Arcade(Sega) had them too actually. I know Resident Evil 1 and 2 did not have them but I can't say if Nemisis(3) had it. I think the hardware limitations prevented QTEs during most of that era especially with the prerendered static backgrounds. Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 were LOADED with them, even opening a damn door in RE6 was a QTE...

Were they ever gone?

God of War maybe?

God of War for PS2 was what got me noticing/loving QTE.

I first remember them pissing me off in Shenmue 2

A lot of arcade games in the 90s had QTEs, pressing A all the time for what ever reason

God of War

"The term "quick time event" is attributed to Yu Suzuki, director of the game Shenmue which used the QTE feature (then called "quick timer events") to a great degree"
