Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U or new 3DS?

So I decided recently that I would probably be trading my Vita in for a 3DS (please don't make this a pro or anti Vita thread).  But then I got to thinking that maybe a Wii U would be better - I only play my Vita at home, and the Wii U has the second screen that I can play anywhere in the house (I think?) and I'm normally more of a console gamer.  I also really like the gamepad.  Here are pros and cons I came up with, please add more if you can think of them, plus any and all opinions.

Oh, also, how does the Wii U hook up to the TV?  HDMI or component?

I should note that I currently have a PS4 and XOne, though I really haven't used the One at all (but I'm afraid to trade it back in).

New 3DS - PROS

  • Huge userbase, likely to get more support going forward
  • More RPGs - would like to play Bravely Default and Fire Emblem
  • Xenoblade 3D coming soon
New 3DS - CONS
  • Other than Xenoblade 3D, not a lot of other games looking forward too
  • Not in love with the system itself
Wii U - PROS
  • Like the system design, especially gamepad
  • Xenoblade X coming soon
  • Could play original Xenoblade via Wii emulator (correct?)
  • Possibly Baynoetta 2 if it isn't too anti-God (would love to hear opinions on this)
  • Have a 4 year old and 2 year old that may like Mario 3D Land or Mario Kart?
Wii U - CONS
  • Worried about support after this year, or replacement soon
  • No Bravely Default, Fire Emblem
  • Cost
Thanks for any feedback!

As for the Bayonetta thing, before I get insulted too much - there's never been a game I haven't wanted to play for religious reasons...but the prospect of being a witch that kills angels the whole game seems a bit much. If the story makes sense or isn't about religion, then I wouldn't care, but finding any info on the story seems nearly impossible....

HDMI.

Out of interest, why did you sell your Vita?

Also, did you own a Wii?

I don't think God has ever been mentioned in Bayonetta. It's not religious other than them using angels and demons in the game.

The Wii U is backwards compatible so you don't need an emulator to play Xenoblade Chronicles (unless you would like to play it with higher IQ of course.) Did you own a DS? Did you own a Wii? What is your favorite genre?

List some games that interest you in the Wii U and 3DS's library also.

Wii U can use either HDMI or component cables, there's the option for both.
Also, Wii U is probably going to last longer than the N3DS will, sure, it will have some exclusive games, but it's just a 3DS revision, just like the DSi/DSiXL were.
Oh, and as a owner of Bayo 2, I don't think it's offensive or anything like that, the story is kinda confusing at first, but I'd say it's worth your money.

Feel free to ask more questions if you need to ;)

Wii U

I'd say the 3DS is the better choice for YOU personally, especially if you like Atlus titles. There are also new titles coming in regularly, including another Fire Emblem. That said, if Xenoblade is your main draw, it's sounding like the 3DS' game isn't as good as the Wii version.

The Wii U will be the better system for the family (it uses HDMI, btw), but its selection is far more limited and will likely remain far more limited. The Gamepad also may or may not be usable throughout the entire home: it has a theoretical range of 20 (30?) feet only, and that gets reduced the more walls there are between the Gamepad and the console. Realistically, you can play it a room or so away from the console before it becomes a potential issue.

Further, it'll be difficult, though not impossible, to track down a copy of Xenoblade now. As an aside, Wii games are NOT played through an emulator: the actual Wii hardware is crammed in there too, so there will never be any emulation issues for any Wii game. This means you can play any and all Wii titles as if it were on the original system.

Just FYI, Bayonetta doesn't just kill angels in Bayo 2, she kills demons as well. There's no underlying religious sentiment in these actions. They all just come after her and she kills them.

I think the Wii U is the better option for the long-term. Also, Wii U is getting Fire Emblem with SMTxFE (though it may not be exactly what you want). As for your RPG fix, you'll be able to play all of the Wii's titles (yes, that includes Xenoblade Chronicles) and the U will get some of its own down the line.

Personally I'd buy the Wii U out of those two, but it's all up to you in the end.
