Thanks to the awesome user MohammadBadir I had the chance to play Monster Hunter 4 and try it for myself. Too many times in the past I've tried getting into this franchise, so I figured why not give it one last chance. Surely there has to be some improvements here anywhere, right? Right?

Well, there ain't. Monster Hunter 4 is just like Monster Hunter 3, which is like other Monster Hunter game. A grindfest that, unfortunately, is completely flawed in its core and Capcom doesn't even bother fixing it at all.

I respect the people that like this game, just like I have some gaming tastes that people has questioned in the past. But it blowns my mind that this franchise in particular gets so much praise. I just can't comprehend what's so good about it. Everything I can see oozes mediocrity, laziness and just plain mind-numbing boreness, mixed with some of the worst controls I've ever experienced in a game. I can understand people like grinding (I like grinding), but why force yourself through such intentionally archaic (in a bad way) gaming design? Why? I don't mind throwbacks to old-school japanese gaming design, but when something is broken, it is broken. It doesn't matter if it is old-school or not.

And I'm not hating, I just can't understand. I'm probably one of Capcom's biggest fanboys in this site. Whatever they do, it's a must buy from me. Doesn't matter if it is Azura's Wrath, Dragon's Dogma, Resident Evil 6 or whatever (crappy DLCs are a no-no, though). But there's a single franchise, a single one, that I have never been able to put myself through: Monster Hunter. And really, I've tried. I've tried so many times in the past, only to almost fell asleep after an hour playing.

Now, I'm not the kind of guy to compare games nor use critic's opinions on the matter, but I can't understand why Monster Hunter gets so much praise, and Lost Planet gets so much hate. Doesn't feel fair to me.

I don't personally like the franchise either. I won't say all the negative about it as you though. I don't think it suffers from mediocrity as you say, but its simplicity works well for many gamers. I think just like any game, it has its fans.

As far as the comparison, I don't like either.

Gotta figure out how to set these up lol.

The thrill is in the pursuit of the best weapons and armor sets, i want to say, which in turn requires you to do many different quests to acquire your materials. Each new weapon or armor is a well-earned reward, and lets you move on to the next thing, either because of how the weapon tree itself works or how you may need something new to fight a new monster standing in the way of your character's rank progression.

The fights are exciting enough to keep the whole process from becoming dull, even if you are running the same monster ad nauseum.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

The first monster hunter I played was on wii, I was really excited for it because it was popular in japan and I play mostly japanese games so this game had to be awesome right? Then I played it and was likje wtf is this everything seemed wrong in the game, I think it was the demo first so I blamed it on a broken demo. Then I got the  whole game and realised Holy shit the demo was not broken. But to myself I kept playing even though it seemed like everything was off with the game, then when I finally put some hours into it yes hours and I went online I literally could not believe how my opinion changed from when I first played the game I understand why everything seemed broken and how actually incredible the gameplay was.

This is probably the only game I ever did a complete 180 on ever. MH4 is probably my most anticipated game for years now, the game IS that addicting, but you need to put some time into it and play online or else you will only come to the same conclusion you  got.

I don't know how many hours of my life were wasted on Monster Hunter Tri, but I can say something for certain: no matter how many chances I gave it, I always came disappointed.

It took me about 8 hours into MH tri to finally get "it" , in that time most games are beaten and over with.

How long did you spend with tri did you play online? Cause to be honest yes single player sucks total balls in MH, I could never see myself being interested in the single player for long ,other than to understand the very very basics of the game.

I don't play online, so the aproximatedly fifteen hours I played were on singleplayer content xD

I'm indifferent. I didn't hate it, but I didn't experience the greatness everybody else seemed to. It was fun, I suppose. Maybe I didn't play long enough.

I still think the game is bad even if it takes advantage of dual analog ...

Many of the bosses in Monster Hunter are plain cheap when it comes their statistical advantage ...

Why would you inflict self torture like that to yourself? Yes the single player is TOTALLY NOT where the game is in MH, its in the online.

You need to play a couple of hours online in the game to have actually play the game, I totally understand why you still have that view of the game cause you played tacked on part of the game.

Its like playing TMNT in time back on the snes and playing the two player "fighting" mode of the game, thats not really the game.

Actually now that I think about it, it is quite hiliarious that you played the single player mode for so long, I cannot imagine anybody torturing themselves like that.

Well, what people expect? I hardly ever play multiplayer on any game, and the game itself advertises as both a cooperative and a singleplayer game.

Like who?

I've only played Monster Hunter tri (wii), but there wasn't a single player boss I fought that I couldn't beat without dying. You just need to find the weapon that works for you, get a good armor set, and play with the mindset that your first priority should be staying alive. If you can't stay alive you are worthless. If you can't get a hit off during a specific attack without getting hit yourself, then don't try to attack at that point in time. It is a change in thinking but I think that is what makes it great. It is very much about overcoming the odds by fighting something that is so much bigger and stronger than you are, but it does so without becoming unfair.
