Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Eurogamer: Mario Kart 8 "best looking console game of the year"

Tagged games:

This thread turned into a banning bloodbath.

Meanwhile, I'd probably, by the by, agree with MK8 being a stunning experience in its entirety and largely helped by the silky-smooth 60FPS which vaults it well over even the IQ superior games.

It's a nice looking game, but we haven't really seen what the PS4/X1 can really do, too many cross-plat titles and upports of last gen games.

Halo 4 HD looks better than most X1/PS4 games too.

Uncharted IV, Halo 5, and Final Fantasy XV will show what the next-gen consoles can do IMO.

Agreed, but I don't think we've seen what Wii U can really do either.

I think you're more or less looking at it. Since the N64, Nintendo's made their consoles so that you can get basically max performance from them pretty much from the get go. As a result, early gen games like Rogue Squadron (GCN), Star Fox Adventures (GCN), Super Mario Galaxy (Wii), and Metroid Prime 3 (Wii) look as good as basically any late gen game. This was a result of Nintendo being frustrated with the N64 hardware.

A 33-watt console built on a 40nm process simply isn't going to keep pace with 120 watt 28nm more modern GPU either ... it just isn't.

Uncharted IV will rip anything on the Wii U to shreds from a technical level.

That said Nintendo's art style is very eye pleasing especially in HD (which also goes to show how full of it all those "HD doesn't matter!" folks were).

Zelda: Wind Waker HD still looks great even though its still basically running extremely dated assets and geometry.

I don't think it's unfair to say MK8 is the prettiest looking game of 2014. Of course that point can be argued, naturally.

But people have to keep in mind, advanced technical graphical wizardry does not always = the best graphics.

At the end of the day, art style rules all. If a game looks great, it's usually because of a great art style.

Don't know where you got the bolded from, I never said it would.

And Wii was not maxed out early; even recycling GCN's architecture, late gen games like Conduit 2 and Jett Rocket are significantly more technically advanced than Mario Galaxy or Prime 3.

Almost nobody has even tried to max out Wii U with games built from the ground up to push its technological limits.

I don't think Wii U is any closer to showing its full capacity than PS4 or Xbone; it's had more time than them, but far less effort.

YEAH!!!
and now everyone should own a WiiU!"

Yeah right just because one reviewer from Eurogamer (a heavily biased site) states his preference in visuals of MK8 everyone should buy a Wii U now.

So because they say something positive about Nintendo, they are biased?

I have more reasons than that to call them biased:

1. They gave SM3DW GOTY of 2013 when the rest of the world was giving it to either TLOU or GTA V.

2. They also gave it a 10, way above its metacritic average.

3. They gave MK8 a 10, again way above its metacritic average.

4. They gave Infamous: Second Son and Driveclub a 7 and 6, way below their metacritic averages. They even criticised Driveclub for not being open-world and not having a festival like FH2 did.

5. They declare this as the best-looking game of this year.

6. Their recent article of PS4's first year, and not even mentioning its highlights like Infamous: Second Son.
