I would be for a gaming console.

And then make a mainstream box. where all the drones can play their cinematic quick time event grey/brown realistic visials>everything games with day1 dlc.

We should finally start to differentiate between gamers and mainstreamers etc.

Funny how you're advocating colorful games for people with an imagination and turn around and call people with a different taste than yours drones!

I think its more to do with the games and their gameplay style then it is to do with how colourful it is.

Rayman wouldn't have sold more if it was unsaturated lol. Its the fact that it was heavily delayed (wii U) and a full priced 2D platformer (not common in this age)

Sunset overdrive never had the buzz some people on here made out and gameplay wise it falls into category similar to dead rising, ratchet and Clankk (loose 3rd person action games)- which aren't huge. So far its sold 320k, I think it will reach 1.5m LT.

Puppeteer would have sold Quadruble if it was a PS4 title instead of a late PS3 title.

Lots of different variables to take into account but I think the market for games that aren't Werstern RPGS or FPS's is just much smaller then it used to be.

Its funnier that in probably your last 30 replies you always seem to jump to conclusions/ go into all defense mode.

Btw some of my favorite games are realistic or dont have cartoony visuals etc.  and NO what you are talking about is not taste its propaganda. its like saying eating a stone just because you can swallow it or drinking petroleum just because you can well drink it is having taste.

I also never said that everyone that touches a game like DarkSouls or MetroidPrime (or all the other okayish/good games) is a drone because I also play those games and I like/love them.

People that accept everything no matter how bad it is  unfinished games with locked content so it can be sold as DLC, that run with 20fps because they focus on visuals more than they focus on gameplay (its called GAME and gameplay for a reason) People that fall for all the hype and marketing are drones because they cant think for themselves. They dont have an own opinion. They buy stuff because people tell them to. 90% of humans are "simple".

Make a box for people like that and let the real gamers play their games. IF the others want to end up looking at dia shows that need 1 button press per minute let them. But dont call them "gamers playing games" because its an insult to everyone who has this hobby.

its like calling people "music enthusiast" when their favorite song is this:

or this

The more mainstream something gets the worse it is. Look at NSMB  its by far the worst Mario series ever.

Lot of bullshit supposition in this thread that's based on pretty much nothing.  No one likes colors?  All games have to be gritty and brown?  Sunset Overdrive would have been a hit if it were more serious?

Saint's Row the Third is up to, what, like six million copies by now?

Maybe the games aren't that good?
If you were a kid and you had to choose between Sunset Overdrive and Call Of Duty, which would you pick? Call Of Duty because you've heard of it and all your friends have it.

Except Sunset Overdrive, Tearaway, Puppeteer, The Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, etc. are all legitimately good (even great in some instances) games.

Yet this game does pretty well as a new IP with limited marketing:

Instead of this, which actually had a fair amount of marketing behind it:

Might not appeal to some people.

Well, haven't you heard? Apparently real is brown, an this for a good 8 years now

I actually prefer colorful games. Games with a limited/gritty/dulled down color palette make visuals very boring for me, no matter how good the textures, lighting or the game themselves are.

If you take Sunset Overdrive and suck out some of the wackier personality of it, mute the colors, sub in more violence/gun play (no wacky guns) does it sell better? Yeah I think so.

That  game is called FUSE and it was one of the biggest flops of the last couple of years. Brown and gray don't automatically make a game sell well.

As for your OP, you're 100% right. They aren't selling like they used to. People move to different thing; they simply don't realize that they like something because their friends do and don't wanna be left out. Cartoony games are not "cool" anymore and thus sell mostly to hardcore Ninty fans. Same thing happened with animals as protagonists.

I always think it's a combination of a lot of factors. Because color games do still work. And examples are in this thread. But things like Time of release, peoples increase in ignoring advertisement, not willing to try new stuff out half the time, review sites making decisions for people, word of mouth, and which console are wining. Cause games to mess up very randomly.

You made some good points... but I honestly wouldn't blame it on the colorful style.

I'd blame it on the marketing mostly.

Sunset Overdrive had decent marketing, yet it sold 130K first week USA, while Watchdogs sold 440K first week USA on X1 only. Both new IPs, both on X1.

The mindset of people is at fault.

"I am 13 year old. People told me color is for little kids so I play games that are violent or lack color"
And when they grow up they keep that mindset. No colors and gore = adulthood.
They are totally unaware of the fact that the less care about other peoples opinions regarding your hobbies/preferences etc the more grown up you are mentally. They try so hard to be adults that they never reach adulthood. They just dont know any better.

I mean alot of people have heard stuff like "grow up already" because they goofed around or played videogames etc. But AGE in society is just an arbitrary thing.

A few days ago I watched a video about a stand up commedian and his audience. Alot of people were like 25-35. Most wore white or dark clothes (alot of people tend to wear dark blue/green grey brown or black when they grow up)

He then asked the audience "who grew up in the late 80s and 90s" and then started to sing old cartoon songs. The crowd joined in and had alot of fun.
The commedian then asked "Where the hell have all of you been for the last 20 years?"

Its just psychology indoctrination.   Same with colors pink being female and blue male  rofl...

This takes alot of time to change.

90% of people are simple they believe what you tell them. All the stereotypes exist because people cant be bothered to form an own opinion.  Commercials alone cant fix this issue they can have an impact but the problem lies within our societies perception of adulthood.

A funny thing is that alot of adults love that they can watch Disney movies with their children because they do know that those movies are good etc. They would probably never go watch the movie on their own tho.  Colorful console games seem to have aditional hurdles  that make it even harder to accept them.
