That game is called FUSE and it was one of the biggest flops of the last couple of years. Brown and gray don't automatically make a game sell well.
As for your OP, you're 100% right. They aren't selling like they used to. People move to different thing; they simply don't realize that they like something because their friends do and don't wanna be left out. Cartoony games are not "cool" anymore and thus sell mostly to hardcore Ninty fans. Same thing happened with animals as protagonists.
