To some extent, yes.

2013 mindset: 360 is so successful, we'll just coast into the Xbox One. 360 will continue to sell itself throughout the year.

2020 mindset: Xbox One has not been near as successful as we hoped. Let's just continue to make money on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Live as we prepare for Xbox Series X. Hopefully Series X does better than the Xbox One.



Lifetime Sales Predictions 

Switch: 151 million (was 73, then 96, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million)

PS5: 115 million (was 105 million) Xbox Series S/X: 57 million (was 60 million, then 67 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

3DS: 75.5 mil (was 73, then 77 million)

Xbox has had Ori and will have Minecraft Dungeons, Wasteland 3, Halo Infinite, Psychonauts 2, Tell Me Why, Grounded, Call of the Sea, The Ascent, Second Extinction, and any other Microsoft launch title for XSX we don’t know about, since they’ll be cross gen. There’s also stuff like Battletoads that can still be 2020 for all we know.

Seems like MS is giving Xbone owners plenty.

Minecraft dungeons,wasteland 3, psychonauts 2 are all coming to PS4. Groudned is early access, and the vast majority of those games are small studio XSX launch games. 

None of those really speak 'swan song of the XB1' like the last great exclusive you'll remember it for. Like TLOU was to the PS3, or What GOT or TLOU2 will be for PS4. I'm sure there will be cross-gen PS4/PS5 titles but I wouldn't include those personally.

If you're happy with the output though then I'm happy for you, I might pick up a couple of them on PC, especially Ori as I did play the first one.

Most people will remember TLOU1 as a "cross-gen" game playable on PS3 and PS4, even if there were a few months between both versions.

And the same will probably happen to TLOU2.

Supporting a platform from launch to the very end allows you to move on with little complaints. If Sony never release a first party game to the PS4 after 2020 I doubt we'll see many people moaning for that very reason. I don't expect many PS5 games to be available for PS4.


Abandoning a platform isn't a bad thing, but to not drop any exciting, big exclusives for the platform long before the new one comes out is in my opinion.

It was a full year between both versions. Calling it cross gen is rewriting history a bit. Especially when it originally came out over 6 months before the PS4 launched. PS3 still that year had Beyond: Two Souls, GOW: Ascension, Gran Turismo 6 And I'm not including any of the small studio/niche exclusives it got in 2013 too.

I forget about the cross gen stuff. It's definitely a good point. Isn't Psychonauts 2 multiplat?
