It's quite frankly hilarious.

Well I don't think Sony is taking as much as they gave last gen.
Frankly, potential sales depends on how competitive MS is willing to get. Price matching Sony isn't going to do much to close a sales gap.

This article is one of the worst piece of wishful thinking text I have ever seen recently, completely devoid of genuine market analyses. XB1, however, is released on an 80 million hungry user base (way over 25 million) and after 7 years (instead of 3). At the release of X360, the vast majority of people were still waiting for PS3. Only after the harcore initial buyers got their hands on X360 and people realised that they got a pretty even experience at a much lower price point, they started to jump off ship, especially with the advent of network effects. Let me give you a bunch of statistics to depict you the vehemence of the situation: XB1 vs PS4 sold in 2014 only (by 4 Oct 2014) World: 2,913,121 vs 7,440,352 (28.1% vs 71.9%) X360 sold globally... by the end of 2005 : 1,178,904 |
Playstation 5 vs XBox Series Market Share Estimates
Regional Analysis (only MS and Sony Consoles)
Europe => XB1 : 23-24 % vs PS4 : 76-77%
N. America => XB1 : 49-52% vs PS4 : 48-51%
Global => XB1 : 32-34% vs PS4 : 66-68%
They wont, but they'll take back a lot, probably somathing like 25M X1 and 30-35M PS4
Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:
PS4: 17m XB1: 10m WiiU: 10m Vita: 10m

I think the XB1 will look more like the N64 in sales and the PS4 might look similiar to the PS1.
End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)
Wii- 72 million 3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases
360- 37 million Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak
PS3- 29 million Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut
Xbox one needs to sell about 4 million from now to the end of this year to match or beat the 360 second year. I think there is a chance for that to happened. Halo MCC, COD, Bundles and advertisement. Also, people been wanting to play all the other exclusive games such as sunset overdrive,killer instinct and Forza.

I'm curious where you think all those extra sales are gonna come from? It lost a huge portion of its market share in NA, last gen it was around 65% I think and now its under 50%. Its obviously gonna do a lot poorer in Europe, basically Sony land and I'm not sure about the UK but I'm assuming they lost a good portion of market share there. Japan is irrelavent and I see rest of the world doing around 5m including China. I don't see it reaching 60m. Edit: I see it reaching 45-50m. |
I agree but to be fair I never gave a number, I just that it'll be between 360 and OG XBox and probably neighbour the NES. To do that it has to sell between 49.10m which is currently SNES in 11th place and 80.82m which is PSP in 9th place. NES is snuggled in the middle at 61.91m.
But to break it down.
PS3 has sold 28m in NA and 360 47m. I think PS4 will beat the XOne to second place in NA this gen but not to the same extent so I think XOne should hit 30m minimum there.
Europe will be much much more one sided. 360 sold 25.34m there and OG XB 7.17m. XOne will be closer to the OG here, probably 10-15m.
Thats a 40-45m pessimistic minimum imo. That would fall short of taking over the SNES but there's one more factor which I think will help nudge it past...
The Wii has become the Wii U.
I know the whole casual argument but 100m owners can't be ignored. Even if only 20-30m of those Wii owners were 'gamers' they still need somewhere to go for their gaming. The Wii U isn't going to appease them so I think there's definitely an audience that are going to migrate to XOne/PS4. Then there's multi console ownership. No doubt a lot of the 100m Wii owners also had one of the others, this gen there's gonna be a lot more PS4-XOne combos out there. I think this could be enough to give it an extra 5-10m, again a bit of a pessimistic estimate imo.
So my estimate is very similar to yours at 45-55m, but I honestly think thats a minimum.
