Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How can Nintendo drastically drop the cost of the WiiU?

IMO, they wont drop the price anytime soon because of the Gamepad (they want that screen for strategic and long term reasons). They will give the gamepad the 3DS treatment over time (brighter screen, 3D screen, etc.)

The answer is they won't. A Wii U costs 180$ to make and with it being 299.99$ they would only get 120$ for profits which isn't that good already. It won't happen and it shouldn't. It's cheaper than the other consoles by 100$.

Only $180?  Really?

Actual cost is 228$ excluding R&D, Marketing, Shipping, and all other non part costs. No idea where they got the $180 figure from

I'll go with your answer.  It sounds more accurate, and I think I've heard it before.

360's and PS3's are still retailing for about $200. Not sure these things have the mileage to go down as much as prior generations.

As someone who would like a WiiU to play those Nintendo gems on, I dont see myself doing so until they lose the controller (which I accept isnt going to happen, and yes I have used it and didnt like it). But if they could make it smaller and a bit more ergonomical, I could see myself buying a WiiU (the less of cost would just be a bonus!)

The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.

They should improve the value, not lower the price.. Throw in some digital games..

This.

Tbh if I would be Nintendo I would  talk to all third parties and then have every single WiiU owner get every single NES game that ever was released for free maybe also OG Gameboy.

Then share he console profit with the third parties.

NIntendo is sitting on gold and not doing anything with it. (like they are not doing anything with their money.... tbh Nintendo knows how to sit they should produce chairs)
NES games being 5€ (which is like 7 dollars) made me exactly buy 0 NES games the VC is simply to expensive. I bought all the VC games that were 30 cents on WiiU  tho simply because 30 cents is nothing and I would even buy 200 or more of games even if I would never use them just so I have them. :)

They can bundle 100 games with the WiiU and that would cost Nintendo maybe  10 dollars. (the lost VC money is totally unimportant because the console gets more users who in return buy more retail games etc.)

Gamepad has lots of empty space.
If they diminish the screen and optimise the size, it can look more like a regular control.
Also 480p for that screen is a low standard for DPI for nowadays screens.

I would like to see a all new smaller gamepad with a screen of size of top 3DSXL screen.

It wouldnt drop the sku price too much, though...

selling more units would help..

Where are u getting those numbers.   according to Iwata in Marxh of this year he said it still cost more to make a Wii U than they can sell them for-   Maybe the $180 # is the basis they have in this fiscal years inventory die to writing off a bunch from last year at a loss but they are still not breaking even on newly manufactured consoles

the $228# mentioned above for manufacture before shipping R and D and marketing makes sense

There is no need for that. Just pump cool games and the console can get to 20-25 million install base, making a nice profit for Nintendo.

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Patch the system so it can operate without the gamepad, then release a system with a pro controller instead of a gamepad. Drop $50 right there. It's the only option to substantially drop its price.
