Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How powerful will Nintendo's next handheld be?

The thread title says it all, how powerful will the 3DS successor be?

3DS is somewhere between PSP & Wii so im gonna go ahead and say its successor will be somewhere between Vita & Wii U in power. it will have a 720p screen and can handle downports of many Wii U games just as 3DS can with Wii (DKC Returns/Monster Hunter/Xenoblade).

It won't be a traditional "handheld" as such, I don't think. I think it'll be very closely linked to Nintendo's next home console.

I think at least 1.2x the Vita....and HD.

And I don't care, the most important thing it NEEDS are dual screens.

It'll be considerably more powerful than the Vita, I'm guessing 720p and Dual Screens

That would be an incredibly underwelming system (in terms of specs) for a 2016-2017 console. Current mobile SOC's are WAY beyond that now.

But they aren't dual screened.

i agree, i think they will be very similar in hardware and have access to all the same games. the major difference will be that the console will be more powerful than the handheld and plays the games at a higher resolution/frame rate(720p/30fps vs 1080p/60fps).

handheld=between Vita & Wii U in power

console=mildly more powerful than Wii U, similar to GC-Wii

but u didnt answer the question lol how powerful do u think it will be?

I think it'll be decently powerful, considering how much progress has been made in the improvement of ARM processors in recent years. It'll probably be just as powerful as tablets are right now, assuming the next handheld comes out in 2016/2017.

I think the next console will be a handheld and a console in one, using stream technology and such! So the handheld will be just as powerful as the next console.

I don't think you get what I mean. I wasn't talking about the screens; or lack thereof of one.. More to the internal specifications of the console. Vita has an ARM Cortex A9 quad-core CPU and PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU in its SOC - which, by todays standards, is already outdated. By the time the console releases it will be a relic when compared to other mobile SOC's by then.
