You can't ban stupidity.

thats far from stupidity.

If you're referring to using hourly data as a basis for long time analysis then we disagree.

of course not in long term, but is good to measure buyers trend towards deals.

for example if sony or ms announce a deal for a day the only place u could measure the success is on amazon

For that you have the daily archives. And even if not you can see daily bursts quite well on monthly charts.

The hourly rankings fluctuate so much that they're just garbage.

i think they are fun.

I was a few steps ahead and I agree.

Why not simply ignore these threads then? Simply consider people who overrate hourly sales from one specific shop in one specific country idiots and focus on other, more reasonable threads.

Why does everything one doesn't like need to be banned/forbidden?

It's kinda impossible to ignore the threads, since they don't have "I'M USING AMAZON HOURLY DATA!" in the title of the thread.  Even people who use insiderp at least put that in the title.  Which is why I still don't get the complaints about those threads, as they are far and between compared to the Amazon ones and they are clearly labeled so you don't enter expecting a better source.

Hmmm, I guess you've got a point there.

When I read the OP, I felt instantly reminded of a somewhat similar situation: On one news website that I read, people would often complain about the sheer existance of certain articles, saying that the topic is too unimportant/whatever to report about, sometimes even claiming that the author had been wasting their time. I've always found those complaints ridiculous, because the title of the article made clear what it's about and thus there was no reason for them to click the article if they weren't interested.

But you're right, this really is a different situation for the reason you've pointed out. I still don't think these threads should be banned, but now I better understand why they can be annoying.

This year amazon have beaten vgc charts thats why its relevant !

The hourly's should be banned, they are pointless.

Even in the one instance where you think they might be useful i.e how does the market react to an announcement, well to be fair it's still only a temporary shift, and the result is still pointless.

Monthly and yearly are the best indicators.

Well, I kinda agree with the OP, but I think that wouldn't solve the issue. When someone wants to "prove" something they will use all weak or twisted arguments at their reach. They would only replace the hourly ranking with other thing.

The hourly actually has a great deal of value to us as a tool for analysis.

Sure, people sometimes over-extend that value where monthly/yearly would be more suitable, but that doesn't change the fact that the hourly offers its own unique contributions to our knowledge.

Well, maybe instead of banning those threads, the OP should be forced to write that they are using Amazon hourly for their argument.  Still seems to clutter up the board, though.

Monthly and yearly are the best indicators.

That is a good point, actually.  That's one of those situations where the weekly sales would still be more appropriate and accurate to gauge if average consumers are actually responding positively to a product, or if its just a few fans of the brand/console purchasing it within an hour or so of each other.

I think it's useful for predicting momentary trends but nothing long-lasting. For example, it was useful to show the effect that the Bayonetta 2 Direct had on previous pre-order numbers (with spikes upwards of 200% in some regions), but it's not useful for saying "OMG BAYO 2 TO SELL 7 BILLION UNITS LOL". People who do that are honestly stupid and deserve to be ridiculed forever.
