Forums - Gaming Discussion - When Do You Think the Next Generation Will Start??

When do you think PS5/Xbox 4/Wii3 will come out?

Generations restart typically 5 years after the release of a new console. This generation is very underpowered graphically, especially the Wii U. Adjusted for inflation, this generation has the cheapest consoles given the time they have been out.

I think Nintendo's next handheld will come out in 2016 since the 3DS is already 3 years old and has its remodels already.

There won't be another Sony handheld I don't think.

Wii U will have a successor as quickly as winter 2017 because of low Wii U sales.

Xbox 3 and Playstation 5 should release in 2017/2018 with processing power at least 4X of the consoles today and full backwards compatibility.

Just my toasty thoughts what do you think??

2020, even though Nintendo will launch in 2019

I'm thinking 2020. They will let it be a longer generation now that people are used to that and they can have a bigger jump with a lower cost of entry the longer they wait because the costs of the bigger jump will have gone down more.

Actually Nintendo can neiter start already in 2017 as then the PS4/XBone Gen is probably at the peak nor Nintendo can wait untill 2019/2020 when i expect Sony and MS to launch the new Systems as they for sure can not keep the WiiU selling this long.
So either they start early (holiday 2017) and again nobody cares about them as the userbase for PS4+XBone should be around 80-90 Million then or they will have some time (early 2018 until holiday 2019) without an actively supported home console on the market.

For Handhelds I guess 2 Holiday 2016 should be the right moment for the 3DS successor.
When WiiU runs out in 2017 Nintendo can strongly focus from early launch on 3DS successor as at this moment they only have got 1 video game system to support.
I dont feel like Sony will bring any PSV successor or Microsoft will enter handheld business.

So:
WiiU2 --> Holiday2017 or Holiday 2019
PS5/XBTwo --> Holiday 2019 or Holiday 2020
4DS --> Holiday 2016
PSV2 --> Holiday 2941^^

Nintendo 2018... Sony/MS 2019... but then anything can change based on adoption rate and SW sells figures.

2016. Nintendo Handheld and console successor together. The handheld in March-ish, and the console in November. The console will be announced as a brother to the handheld, and not a successor to the Wii U, though it'll be backward compatible with the Wii U and share the same eshop. It'll be akin to the DS "third pillar" statement.

I agree with everything toast boy said.

I'm sure the next consoles from Sony and Microsoft will release on 2019, while Nintendo's new console will be out by 2017-2018.

Nintendo - 2018
Sony & Microsoft - 2020

I think economics will come into play as companies content with longer generation.
