Forums - Gaming Discussion - History repeating: Xbox One is following PS3′s rocky first year

Except, The PS4 is not a PS3, its a Conservative Wii. The PS3 made its comeback against the 360, famous for hardware issues, US centric brand, the only one paying for online, The XB1 is up against a more powerful machine that is identical in price best. 100$ dollars cheaper at worst, a world wide brand, and offers a similar if not better online subscription.
And paying two online subs for consoles, is not a desired place to be in.

Xbox One may not catch PS4 in sales but when I hear people talk about how the system is bad and not worth owning I just shake my head every time. I own both PS4 and Xbox One and I would not trade mine in for anything. Its a great system that gets better each month with real meaningful updates. Cant wait to see whats next!

What ever medication you are on I want some did you really spend all that money on consoles. Think of the PC you could have got for the same money as them madness if you ask me.

So he spent money to get the systems he wanted and he is on meds? Maybe he already has a PC and for his GAMING needs he chose to buy gaming consoles because they have the GAMES he wants to play.

A major difference is X1 has absolutely no chance of catching up and/or surpassing PS4, nor do they deserve to

Why not? If the PS3 could do it, why is it outside the realm of possibility for the X1 to do it?

If MS focuses on providing quality first-party titles, I don't see why the console won't be looked back on as a success, similar to how people now view the PS3. Some of these responses are ridiculous, it hasn't even been a year yet.

I don't think it will sell nowhere near as bad as people think. The comparisons with the Wii U that were recently made are completely ridiculous and X1 will outsell it with ease. But I don't think it has a chance to catch up because MS isn't that strong in the console area. They don't have the reaction power that Nintendo and Sony already used to regain share:

- MS launched first with 360 and ended 2nd/3rd. Only Sega managed to do it historically. Both Nintendo and Sony won all fights they get early and were capable of winning some even launching after competitors (something Sega and MS never did).

- PS3 was a terribly designed machine and managed to catch a well projected 360. I think it's hard to see a badly designed X1 reach a well designed PS4 simply because Sony looks to be more competitive.

- PS4 is stronger and cheaper to manufacture. Biggest cost in PS4 is the GDDR5 memory that will see costs being driven down by mass production to feed consoles and GPUs with lots of memory. X1 has to cut costs in its big APU with embeded memory and it's naturally slower to cut costs there.

- PS3 had the advantage of having an antecessor that sold 160M and it was a competition to 360 in the beginning. In a similar way, we saw the NES fighting the Genesis and the PS1 fighting the Dreamcast. A dominant antecessor will delay the adoption of a competitor machineeven if it's blatantly more powerful.

And I don't see the PS3 as a success. I don't see it as a failure either, because it sold 80M+. But it managed to lose a 160M share and that's not a success by any mean.

Because Xbox doesnt have nearly as many territories where it has a history of success like Playstation does.

Europe is and always has been Sonyland, PS1 was the first hugely successful console in Europe and they have been the preferred choice ever since. Xbox has little no chance being successful in Japan with the first 2 consoles averaging about one million each while Playstation has always sold 10m+ in Japan. Also in developing countries Playstation has always been the brand of choice.

Basically Xbox only has America where it can possibly stage a comeback against PS4 but even if it does win America, it likely wont be able to offset the difference in Europe+Japan+Rest of World

None of these really mattered last time around when the PS3 shambled out of the gate. X360 managed to make it's presence felt in Europe even after the first Xbox didn't set the world on fire. And even just based on the 360's US and European sales, it's practically tied to what the PS3 is at the moment, even with the PS3's supposed global brand recognition.

These things aren't set in stone. Average customers aren't so blinded by brand loyalty, they just buy whatever their friends say they should. By the way, I've never owned any of the Xbox consoles, I've always gamed on either Playstation or Nintendo consoles. I just hate premature arrogant statements like "it can't" and "it won't". You can't predict the future accurately. Maybe there's a Naughty Dog-style success story in the X1's future.

Well I never said it was impossible just that its not likely.

Yes it did matter, desptie releasing 1-1.5 years later, costing $200 more, having inferior multiplats/online It was still able to outsell 360 by about 25m in non american regions.

And just to add: "Both consoles had ridiculously high prices, way above the nearest competitor" is not true. PS4 is 400 and X1 is 500. It's 25% more expensive (well, it was). PS3 was 600 while 360 was 300. It's 100%.

MS is fighting a completley different battle now than what Sony did with the PS4. Sony was arrogant and overpriced there system. Sony did not force a policy on the consumer that would dictate what they would do with there purchases or other restrictive polices. People are pissed and they still are. The MASSIVE loss of marketshare in the US is proof of that. They have to overcome that and the fact that Sony has best versions of multiplats.

I like the Xbox One for the features and some exclusives. Along with the multiplayer multiplats.
If I want games that was developed to look spectacular (Witcher III), then I will get it on my PC.

Will get a PS4 probably when Uncharted drops, but in my honest opinion, the console is only good for the exclusives and almost all of the good ones are single player :
Maybe Sony will offer more, but PS Now imo is going to flop hard if they don't perfect the pricing.

I can't really see a slim version of the PS4 coming out for a long time. (Not like it can get much smaller anyways)

But when a slim XBO comes out that is nicely price, it will sell like hot cakes.

Very funny joke.

Preferences are fine but generally speaking the XB1 has no multiplat advantages, multiplayer or single player.

When you consider that A) PS4 will always have the best version graphically and performance wise and B) The games costs the same on both platforms then it becomes obvious which is the better version.

The Wii U is probably the best for exclusives, then the XB1, and PS4 but obviously it doesn't need exclusives.

Furthermore, the whole when X happen XBOs will sell, thing is starting to get embarassing.

Frankly, you need to update your excuses, this seems like a lot of the arguments made against the PS3, and well that is cleary not valid here.

The XBO is basically a cheaper, less exclusive powered version of the PS3.
