A major difference is X1 has absolutely no chance of catching up and/or surpassing PS4, nor do they deserve to

Why not? If the PS3 could do it, why is it outside the realm of possibility for the X1 to do it?

If MS focuses on providing quality first-party titles, I don't see why the console won't be looked back on as a success, similar to how people now view the PS3. Some of these responses are ridiculous, it hasn't even been a year yet.

I don't think it will sell nowhere near as bad as people think. The comparisons with the Wii U that were recently made are completely ridiculous and X1 will outsell it with ease. But I don't think it has a chance to catch up because MS isn't that strong in the console area. They don't have the reaction power that Nintendo and Sony already used to regain share:

- MS launched first with 360 and ended 2nd/3rd. Only Sega managed to do it historically. Both Nintendo and Sony won all fights they get early and were capable of winning some even launching after competitors (something Sega and MS never did).

- PS3 was a terribly designed machine and managed to catch a well projected 360. I think it's hard to see a badly designed X1 reach a well designed PS4 simply because Sony looks to be more competitive.

- PS4 is stronger and cheaper to manufacture. Biggest cost in PS4 is the GDDR5 memory that will see costs being driven down by mass production to feed consoles and GPUs with lots of memory. X1 has to cut costs in its big APU with embeded memory and it's naturally slower to cut costs there.

- PS3 had the advantage of having an antecessor that sold 160M and it was a competition to 360 in the beginning. In a similar way, we saw the NES fighting the Genesis and the PS1 fighting the Dreamcast. A dominant antecessor will delay the adoption of a competitor machineeven if it's blatantly more powerful.

And I don't see the PS3 as a success. I don't see it as a failure either, because it sold 80M+. But it managed to lose a 160M share and that's not a success by any mean.
