Forums - Sports Discussion - US Patent Office withdraws Redskins' trademark due to "disparaging" nickname

They should call them the Washington Bullets since the basketball team dropped it for the stupid Wizards name.

I'm part Native American and I don't find the term Redskins offensive in the slightest.

You know one cap insignia that I always thought was a little offensive (once I reached the age of 14 or so)?

Cleveland Indians

Just look at it...  In my view it makes them look stupid.

I guess it isn't as bad as their one in the late 40s...

I believe they just have a C on their cap now, but according to wiki they still use the cap insignia along with caps that just have a C.  At least the Washington Redskins has a respectful logo when compared to the Cleveland Indians.

Solution?  Give the Cleveland Indians the Washington Redskins logo and change the Washington Redskins to the Washington Bullets considering our nation kills each other with guns even more than when the basketball team had the name Bullets.

so stupid. I am white. If the was a team called the White Skins or the Caucasion Cruisers I would not care in fact the same people would be suing to change the name because it shows favoritism to white people. but since its a red skin it is clearly disparaging- basically they are telling Native americans to be ashamed of the look because portraying that look is disparaging.

Aren't you great white lady/guy. (What the heck has being white got to do with it when this is a specific target of a specific group within this ethnicity. There are thousands of different white cultures i.e Irish, English, German, Dutch, Russian and it would be like targeting one of them).

And No, it would be like calling the team the Washington Honky Crackers. Or the Washington hill billies. The "Red****s" is aimed particularly at one group of native americans also, whereas calling someone white refers to a whole race of people. Most notably the race who destroyed most of the world as we know it and also covers hundreds of groups on itself.

Native Americans do have different tribes you know? Please try not to comment on things you don't understand.

Screw this, its a name a few find "offensive" due to political correctness run a muck. I am a redskins fan now! Just bought a Redskins hat and jersey off amazon.

So you became a fan of a team because they were politically incorrect. You do understand that there is such thing as a balance. You could be neutral or not care too. Will you buy my new teams shirt, the Milwaukee Cracker Honky tonk hill billies or maybe the Chicago American Fatso's.

In reality though, I wish people would lighten up. I'm Irish and Americans ramble on about leprechauns and nonsense and I find it funny. Look at the Celtics and the fighting Irish. Heck, look at P.S I love you. Silly stereotypes and nothing like or got to do with Ireland in reality, but yeah, maybe people just need to lighten up. But in my book, that means that everyone should be treated equally including jews, black people and mexicans. That is just never going to happen though.

Im saying that a small minority should not have a majority influence. And I am not alone, many others see this as bullshit.

As i insert this with over 45K votes, 62% say they should NOT change their name.

You are ridiculous and over sensitive. Jews is associated with Hollocaust so lets not say that anymore. Gay is associated with AIDs epidemic so lets not say that anymore. Rwanda is associated with Genocide so lets not say that anymore along with Serbs.

Also, ******. No one is going to get offended by you saying nigger or redskin. Its a damn word and we have had threads talking about nigger here before. The only time it becomes an issue is when it is used in this way, "you are a *****." So to use astriks for ******* when you are talking about the name ******* makes you seem self rightgeous and pompus

"It's just a word."

Tell it to this guy please:

That's probably the word he heard as he was getting whipped. But remember it's "just a word."

Red***** is offensive and should be banned. It's not about being politically correct, but about doing the right thing. Words DEHUMANIZE people, which makes it OK to discriminate against them. That "just a word" was used to make blacks seem "less than human," which means it's OK to enslave them. After all, they aren't human - well, in the antebellum era they were what, 1/3rd of a human right?

Just like with Native AMericans. Words like "Red****" and "Savage" are meant to dehumanize them. So it's OK that they went from 40 million people to only a few million. After all, they' aren't human right?
