Yup, Smash is actually a perfect fit for a variety of NFC Nintendo figures. As long as it's not mandatory.

I am still really curious about how they will handle this. In my opinion they need a "hub" game to tie everything together but it seems like they aren't going that route...without it I don't think this will have much of an impact.

It'll be a 'cheat' way to unlock characters and also a way to store stats and the 'special moves' for those characters.

For me, it means that I'll definitely be getting figures of my favourite characters (Young Link and Sheik for sure) .

i hope they use it to unlock additional character models that could have been clone characters. For example, Fierce Diety Link, Young Link, Dr. Mario, Roy, and Blood Falcon. This wouldn't mess up the character balance and these alternate model with have their own multiple set of recolorings.

Not overly surprising, I must say. Just hope that these figurines if implemented don't lock off new characters, but we shall see I suppose.
