Forums - Gaming Discussion - Benefits of Xbox without Kinect?

And can you stop saying xbone? xb1 isnt hard at all to type.
and if it isnt about typing youre just trying to be derogatory to someones personal preference.

If you require 100% conformity to a corporation's chosen marketing slogan, you are setting yourself up for failure.
MS might call their product "The Uber Cloud Machine that detroys pansy crap from Japan - Box"
but that doesn't obligate anybody to use that term: People will use a corporate-marketing-created term to the exact extent
that they find the word cool, expressive, and reflecting of their own perspective on things. If not, they won't.
Blame MS marketing for any failure of the broader gamer population to not jump on their excercise in vocabulary manipulation.
Back in the day, the guy who made your shovel just called it a shovel, and didn't try to force you to call it some bullcrap name.

If MS named it "Xbox 720" that would make sense and been broadly used/accepted,
Although MS' naming conventions (XBone/360) are and have been ridiculous acrobatics to not "be 1 number lower than PS",
i.e. evade the fact that PS has a longer heritage, so if using silly names is to be faulted, than MS is the original guilty party.
I don't see anybody mocking PS4 "OOH, PSFOOOUR, AS IF it follows three previous Playstations.... OOOHHH...".
PS4 is a utiitarian logical term, while MS' continual desperate name-shifting just oozes pretense and disconnect.

"Xbone" is in fact the most accurate shortening of MS' chosen name, which spells out 'o-n-e' rather than using the numeral.
Why do you take Xbone as derogatory anyways?  Because it sounds a bit silly? So what, what's wrong with silly?
There's no reason you can't embrace the term Xbone as a term of endearment.

People use it in a bad way. Xbone this, xbone that. i gues i got tired of it. XBO is better too honestly. and if your so into spelling Xbox one, xbone you do relise that you only save like 2 letters.

Ltd predictions by the time 9th Gen comes out

Ps4:110million

Xbox one :75 million( was 65)

Wii u: 20 milliion

Attraction to now same-price-point Xbone:
Exclusive games
Xbox brand loyalty (athough the stupid name acrobatics defeat that to some extent, rather than just being Xbox 3)
In terms of the attraction of Kinectless SKUs,
I *don't* see "TV features" being a big attraction as long as the TV interface is tied to Kinect,
Since voice control doesn't really depend on a camera unit, they could allow ANY microphone to drive voice-control features.
(although that reduces even further the value proposition to buy a Kinect accessory, so they may well not do so)

So far unstated is that without Kinect/voice control, then the OS interface sinks or swims based on the manual controller, so they probaby want to improve that functionality as well. (enabling voice control with any mic may be an easier option there)

I guess I'm so into not pandering to thin-skinned defensive fan-persons without a sense of humor,
and their corporate masters who want to play dumb-name-games, that I will continue using "Xbone".
May you enjoy gaming on whatever platform(s) you have.

Ok so by now we should all know a xbox one bundle without the kinect is coming in June.  So now that Microsoft has dumped the 1 main selling feature that the ps4 didn't have, what does Microsoft really have to set it apart from the PS4???  I thought that the Kinect was the standout feature and the main reason to buy a Xbox One over the Ps4, so now what?  They are now the same price but multiplats apparently run better on PS4 so why would anyone choose MS? The only real reasons that I could see are that they either like the exclusive games(halo/gears/ryse/etc..) or they just like xbox live better then psn for some reason.

Seriously, we are back to this?

You are anwsering the question in your OP... Even if you believe that the only differentiators are exclusives and Xbox Live being better (or so you are pointing out that other people may believe that), it is enough to choose the Xbox One over the Playstation 4 if you are interrested into those perks...

But then you have other perks like TV Integration (HDMI In), Twitch integration, controller (you know people may actually prefer the Xbox One one...), Microsoft Eco-System (Skype, OneDrive, etc...) etc...

Many many reason to choose one over the other... (same goes for the PS4 by the way).

Edit: Also, Kinect is still available to buy later...

This is what the Cheif Marketing and Strategy guy Yusuf Mehdi had to say when asked a similar question:

So now that Kinect is optional and there’s a $399 price point, there are a lot of comparisons to PS4. What do you view as your main differentiator now if someone’s buying a standalone Xbox One system compared to PS4? The consoles are starting to seem pretty similar these days, especially in the wake of this announcement.

I think there are four main areas in terms of how ours system is differentiated. First is that the reason people buy these consoles is to play games. We’ve got the best games line-up. We had the best games line-up this past holiday if you talk to most experts in the games industry. As we go into E3, you’re going to see an incredible games line-up. Knock on wood, I believe we’re going to have a great games line-up for this coming holiday as well.

Second thing is people buy games to play with their friends. We have had the best multiplayer gaming system in this space for many years with Xbox Live Gold. We’ve really set the standard. You get better matchmaking capability with SmartMatch, you get better protection against people who cheat. Xbox Live Gold is the best place to come play with your friends.

Third is the original vision we had for Xbox One, which is an all-in-one entertainment device, and it still is, even with the $399 SKU. You still get Xbox One as an input one device where you can still watch live TV, do two things at once, input switch. A lot of the things you do with entertainment you just can’t even do on other systems. We’re really built for the future.

And finally you can still add on Kinect to create all these additional experiences with voice commands, biometric recognition, recording gameplay and more.

Those four things make it very differentiated, and now that the price points are the same, and people looking at games and entertainment experiences are future-proofing, I feel that we have a very differentiated system.

My take:
Wont' knock on anyone's opinion about which console has the best library. I think in the coming months and years that quantity is gonna be too far in favor of the competition to use this point though.

They set the standard in the past but as other changes such as apps not behind a paywall and games with gold indicate Sony is the bar right now irrespective of how things were seen in the past.

As he said himself the first reason people buy a console is because of games.  Spending so much time investing in these features is A PART OF what got them in hot water in the first place. PS4 can't even play MP3s.

You can get that sans voice commands with a cheaper peripheral on the competition too.  Singstar has voice commands why not PS4 Sony? That would have been something to share in those collaborative planning and technology disucssions with all your developers.   I know all you need is a mic and PS4 camera has them.

I think if those are the only differentiators then they are in trouble. It all really boils down to his first statement about having the best games. I wonder if they can keep that perception going forward.  Maybe they should do an old fashioned smear campaign advertisements . Tired of waiting for greatness? check out our lineup and flash that price at the end.  If you think you have the superior lineup it shouldn't be a problem.

Who on earth said anything about buying 1 system over the other? I sure didnt. The question is whats the benefit of buying an Xbox One. I said to play cool exclusives.

A misunderstanding on my part, I meant exclusives alone are only justification to a minority, as evident with the Wii U right now.

Being a single console owner would suck. Miss out on so many cool games.

Agreed. Unfortunately I miss out on handheld games because I only borrow handhelds not own them.

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

It allows for a cheaper console. It gives consumers options. Do I want Kinect or not?
Microsoft possibly saves money. They get more console sales. More sales for games since the install base is higher.
Probably a few more.

I like all the posts that continue to knock the X1 for being the same price as PS4 despite being the "weaker" of the two, as if all of a sudden not being the most powerful console of a generation is a bad thing.

See..

X360/Wii
PS2
PS1
SNES (if you count Neo Geo, CD-i, 3DO and Jaguar as same gen)
NES

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

With Kinect gone there truly is no reason to get an X1 over a PS4. You can argue about games all you want but PS4 has just as many if not more now, and this gap will only increase in the future (As always).
