Nintendo should have an E3 conference only if they want to succeed in America. It does effect other markets too, but it's really a North/South America thing.

If you have a good E3 you become a hot news topic - you show up as a major news story for a couple of days and even a week. . Microsoft had a huge on in '09 with the showing of 'Project Natal.' Kinect went on to become the fastest selling new device.  Nintendo did it when they launched the Wii too.  While there were plenty of other things that happened and what they did, I don't think that was a coincidence.

So does Nintendo really want to succed in the Americas?

Duh, why wouldn't they!? However, having a conference or not really has nothing to do with it. See Gamecube, 3DS prior to SM3DL/price cut, and Wii U prior to E3 2013. The Wii was successful not because of a conference, but simply because it was a highly appealing product thanks to it's revolutionary at the time motion controls and casual/non-gamer/etc. games that took advantage of them.

I am quite capable of accepting that things could be done 'differently' for E3.

The question is: is Nintendo in a position to try to be super different about their conference right now?

Why didn't they try this 'experiment' when they were number one instead of when they are struggling to be on track to match their biggest home console failure?

They should try to do EVERYTHING right now: what they are planning on doing PLUS a regular E3 presentation.

This +10000 funny how when Ninty was on top, their e3s were great and it was expected they show up. Now that they are not all of a sudden, e3 isnt a big deal anyway and not showing up is fine...ok

Live presentations were never part of E3 to begin with...

And as most people has said, I loved the live presentations and mostly for the reactions of the audience, but since the big majority of people watch it on stream, it makes sense.

Furthermore, they will be present on this year's E3.

PS3 didn't have shit for about a year and half.  Same could be said about Xbox One and PS4.  I don't see anything on other systems that are must have games yet.

It's not so much about winning as it is competeing. Now is not the time to duck, cower and throw up the figurative white flag which is what they're doing. They're losing, and losing bad. What they needed to do imo, was come out swinging. Let's see Metroid Prime 4 with a rubust online component. Lets see a dark, mature Zelda. Lets see some AAA, core software. I want to see them come out on stage, stand tall like the Nintendo of old and say "Bring it on."

What they're doing now is just...sad.

I don't see anything sad about bettering their presentation format and bringing E3 to more people. Seems uber awesome to me! Less fluff, more games!

But that's PR, not reality.

It doesn't matter. The content matters, the form not so much. Even if they had an e3 press conference you still would havr seen it on streaming.

the idea of a bloated, overly expensive, live conference is unnecessary. What IS necessary, is to engage your fans, get the attention of potential buyers, and show off LOTS of content. If they can do that, having lots of videos throughout E3 instead of one big waste of a conference, could really work.

Don't get me wrong, Nintendo has had some truly great live conferences in the past, and some really great moments coming from them. But I'm not broken up about their shift in approach. If what they do works, you might well see more companies try it. In all honestly, E3 has been fading out as far as actual importance to the industry for awhile now. It used to feel like something to really look forward to. But these days? Not so much.

i really couldn't care less as long as they reveal new games that im interested in. If I was personally attending E3 than I would want them to have a live conference but since I will not be attending it doesn't matter one bit.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

It's funny some are still using phrases like "not showing up" to describe Nintendo's E3 plans. It sounds to me like they will have a stronger presence this year than anyone else.

Or is Microsoft hosting some kind of live Killer Instinct tournament I haven't heard about? Maybe Sony will have constant live coverage of their demo booths for the duration of the show? Speaking of demo booths, have either of them revealed plans to make their E3 demos (perhaps of Drive Club or the new Halo) available outside of Los Angeles?
