Soccer gets little national coverage in the United States - other than the World Cup which gets a lot of coverage.

And as kow said, shirt sales have Rooney dominating. Outside of Ronaldo, Messi and maybe 3 or 4 other players, Rooney is top draw when it comes to worldwide popularity.

well, maybe Rooney is actually more well known now than pirlo, after considering it, ill admit that. but he wont be in 4-5 years. Pirlo is considered a legend in italian football, Rooney well all be but forgotton by then. and this is coming from someone who hates pirlo, and liked rooney. 

Also, Social Media might not be all that fair to Pirlo, considering all pirlos posts are in italian, while Rooneys are in english, and there is a big difference between the people who speak english and the people who speak italian. 

either way, check Ronaldo's and Messi's facebook and twitter. they are a huge way off from Rooney. no way is Rooney the most famous player in the world.

Couldn't find anything on 2012/2013, but 2013/2014 have Ronaldo and Messi top 2 and Rooney in 5th.
