40 million - Sega Genesis (Mega Drive)
10 million - TurboGrafx-16 (PC-Engine)

Fifth Generation:

102 million - Sony Playstation

Note: I'm only listing the consoles that sold well.

SNES vs Playstation, it's a tough choice. For me SNES barely edges it out, can't go wrong with Super Metroid and Earthbound.

Arghh so hard... Really, for me, it comes down to FFVII vs Earthbound... Arghh. I choose both!

The fifth generation. It showed a bigger leap on graphics and storytelling. Also, it spawned few of the most recognizable games like Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy VII, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, and others.

The fourth generation aged better. The fifth generation set the standards for "3d" gaming though.

4th gen.
more games.
better games.
most of those games also stood the test of time.

Well, the 5th generation was definitely more loaded with consoles. The 4th had the SNES, GEN, TG16, CDI, Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD. The 5th had the PS1, N64, SAT, 3DO, Jaguar, Amiga CD32, FM Towns Marty, PC-FX, Apple Pippin, Playdia, and Casio Loopy.

The transition from the 4th to 5th was the biggest in gaming I believe. Every generation since has mainly been a refinement of the 4th generation (for 2D games) or 5th generation (for 3D games). I would personally go with the 5th generation.

The fourth gen was really the pinnacle of what 2D gaming had to offer. The fifth set precedents for 3D gaming: Nintendo with the analog stick, Sega with polygonal modeling, and Sony introducing dual sticks.

I think I'm gonna go with the fourth because of the DKC trilogy - I love those freakin' games.

5th, because of PS1 and the first console I played games on.

Obviously fourth gen was better. SNES alone seals the deal
