Well, the 5th generation was definitely more loaded with consoles. The 4th had the SNES, GEN, TG16, CDI, Neo Geo AES and Neo Geo CD. The 5th had the PS1, N64, SAT, 3DO, Jaguar, Amiga CD32, FM Towns Marty, PC-FX, Apple Pippin, Playdia, and Casio Loopy.

The transition from the 4th to 5th was the biggest in gaming I believe. Every generation since has mainly been a refinement of the 4th generation (for 2D games) or 5th generation (for 3D games). I would personally go with the 5th generation.
