Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Are the nintendo classic games so well rated, because we had lower standards back in the day?

Back in the day when the console business was fresh you'd be happy if there was a new game released it was a rare occurance!
A game these days has to contend with dozens if not hundereds in the game genre, due to the higher competition we had to become more critical.
Can we say the older high rated games were of a lower standard relatively to the current day titles like Yoshi's new island?

Instead of seeking to convince others, we can be open to changing our own minds, and seek out information that contradicts our own steadfast point of view. Maybe it’ll turn out that those who disagree with you actually have a solid grasp of the facts. There’s a slight possibility that, after all, you’re the one who’s wrong.

yes, also Nintendo games are mostly rated on ''fun''.

Nah. They're timeless classics. Play them today, they're still lots of fun and better than a lot of stuff today.
Though in all fairness it was a lot easier back in the day to make a great video game.

Dang it Kirby, If you are gonna make April Fools threads now, what will you make during April Fools?

But to answer your question, no. Even if we play them right now, we will still have for fun that the 75% of the shit games that get produced these days... When OOT got that 3d remake for example, I couldn't stop playing it till I beat it twice cause it was so much fun!

Yeah. Nowadays we have higher standards thanks to  amazing games like Shadowfall and Ryse!

We have to remember that old games were developed on and for limited hardware compared to today. If you compare todays games with those 20 years from now, will todays games be able as good as we remember them?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

Yes. It's like when Avatar the first 3D movie came out and everyone was full of praise about it. Now you have a lot of people who don't even like 3D anymore or find it better used in other movies.

A game like Ocarina of Time would have scored 85 on Metacritic, tops if it was released in this day and age. Our standards are much higher now.

The classic games were rated highly, because they were that good. Put them side to side with current games and the quality of their design isn't really any worse than what we have now. In fact, the new games struggle to match or best the quality of the classics, despite having the benefit of over 20 years in technological advancements.

True nintendo nowadays would not be able to deliver the right experience for a starfox or fzero, they know they weren't that good to begin with back then and now it would be so very noticable the quality is low

Sort of. If Ocarina of Time released today, it wouldn't have a 99 on Metacritic. As an example, that basically means Twilight Princess is better than Ocarina of Time to critics, since it got a 96 on Metacritic with higher standards for games and more reviews.

Still, that doesn't keep their classic games from being great.

It was a rare occurance when a game was released?  Uhhhhhh... there were about 800 of them released on the NES which was active for about 6 years.  So that's about 110 per year, or about one every 3-4 days.  Not as many as today, but hardly a rare occurence.
