There already was some fallout just from the UK price cut, and the game bundurus.

There will be people who just wanted to xb1, and not the kinect, but bought it day 1 thinking there was no way around it. I just don't know how many. It could be a small minority...but they do exist.

Also, iirc an xbox one person tweeted at some point that kinect made up almost half the cost of the system.

If you look at it from the perspective of the ps4, with gddr5 costing in the area of 50-70$ more than the x1, and the chip likely costing around 10-20$ more, You're looking at a system (without kinect) costing roughly 320$ or something. So, yeah, you're basically saddled with a 150-200$ kinect since all the other parts are nearly identical.

Why in these ram price comparisons does no one factor in the cost of the ESRAM and the extra die size because of the workaround, Comparing just DDR3 against GDDR5 is just short sighted at best.

Hypothetical situation...

If all specs for the PS4 and the XBOne remained the same, and all exclusives remained the same, but the PS4 was $499 and the XBOne was $399, I think the sales numbers would be reversed.

If all specs for the PS4 and the XBOne remained the same, and all exclusives remained the same, but the XBOne had no Kinect included, and it was priced at $399 (the same as the PS4), then I think global sales would be roughly even, with the exception of what the PS4 sells in Japan.

Hence, I would agree with kowenicki. Maybe his 95% claim was a little high, but I wouldn't doubt it if it is 90%+.

People talk about value, but I think for the average consumer, they both play CoD in HD, they both have great online, they both have great 3rd party support, they both have great exclusives and so I think they both seem to have the same value. I don't think Kinect or the cable TV integration really adds any value, or at least any more value to counter the exclusive features of the PS4.

In Canada, they recently bumped up the price of the PS4 to $449 (an increase of $50 due to currency fluctuations), while the XBOne is still at $499. I know that is is still supply constrained there, but I am curious if anyone has factual sales numbers to see what effect that price change has done.

this has been known even before xbox 1 was released. Do people here need reminder every day that PS4 is winning? it's getting old.

lol... imagine how Nintendo fans feel with the Wii U.

Price, brand awareness (worldwide) and no negative press going against it prior to its launch..

The other stuff is just icing on top.

If the XB1 was $100 cheaper, then its fair to assume that the XB1 would be of pooer quality it terms of specs. I doubth that MS could have made the XB1 $100 cheaper and end up matching PS4 specs at that price. So we cant just change the price and not take into consideration that the specs would be much lower.  Also if MS could launch at $400 then Sony could launch at $300, thats how this argument is going to work.

Nothing would change if the XB1 was $100 cheaper, it would still outsold by a more superior console, that would aslo be $100 cheaper.

Fail argument.

This is a very good point, too.  If MS made the same choices they were going to make, DRM and including Kinect, then it's obvious they would have had to dumb down the HW even further, till they were maybe a step above Wii U, to launch at $299.  I mean there is no way investors would have stayed on if MS was taking a PS3 loss with the One.  And I think the power gap the PS4 has is already worth an extra $50-$100, but it would be worth even more than that with the further dumbed down One.  Really, the One would be selling worse if that's what they had to do to beat Sony's price, since it would be a PR nightmare to have a system barely above the Wii U, which itself is barely above the PS3.

Well, they're second right now, aren't they? :P

I mentioned this argument to my buddies a few days ago during a car ride when we were talking about the new consoles. The day I got my PS4, I had games to play. 399 for the console and I could start downloading and playing games right away without a penny. I was able to access Netflix and Amazon Prime content without giving SONY any additional money. This is all ignoring my PS+ subscription. The fact that I had that because I was a PS3/Vita owner at some point just meant that as soon as I got my PS4 I had even more games to play. And not some games that are 3+ years old but fairly recent stuff. Stuff that people still care about. It's just so easy to jump into the PS4 from a financial perspective. Especially if you've had PS+ already because of your past console.

Only a short few months after the Wii U's launch and it was only $50 more than the Wii's launch price. Hell, when you adjust for inflation, the Wii was only $15 cheaper at launch than the Wii U currently is. It also continued to get more of the "Wii' style games. And yet neither the Wii U nor these games took off. Why? Do you honestly think $50 (actually even less) makes the difference between Wii-like sales and Wii U-like sales?

Bolded: And what does that have to do with anything? The PS2 was far more popular in 2006 than the PS3 was in 2012 and could be purchased at a lower price, so I'm failing to see your point.

Bolded 2: Is that why the first pricedrop did next to nothing? The Wii U's potential for sales has never been like the Wii's and it never will be. It doesn't have the same appeal to casuals, regardless of the price. You can pretend that less than a $100 difference makes the difference between record breaking sales and terrible sales, but there's just no basis for it.

The PS2 was selling in other territories by that time, the PS3 was still in full swing when the U released. That clears the 1st bolded up.

I fail to understand your $15 cheaper argument. The U came out more than a year ago and the deluxe set (the proper equivalent to the Wii) is still $300. That's 50$ more expensive.

As for inflation, every 100$ was $114 in 2012 per Inflation Calculator. That means that what was 250$ should then have been $285, not $350.

Not only that, but the Wii was initially a huge craze, that's not the case for the U. Despite that, the U still aims the mainstream (by virtue of its games library), so the pricepoint at the moment isn't allowing it to succeed.

And finally, the Wii is canibalizing WiiU sales as was seen by the Just Dance 2014 sales figures, the U is still competing against satisfaction with the Wii, so people are not as ready to upgrade, and a high price will severely compound that effect.

Selling in other territories by that time? What? It was still selling in the same markets the Wii was released in and still pulling big numbers so I'm not sure what you're suggesting.

Yes, you're right about inflation. That means the Wii's price today would've been equivalent to $285, which is only $15 cheaper than the Wii U currently, which is exactly what I said in my last post.

And yes, you're right about the Wii initially being a huge craze. That was due primarily to motion controls being a huge craze. The Wii U is getting the same casual games that the Wii got and is currently only $15 dollars more than the Wii was launch aligned, after adjusting for inflation. You're saying that price is what's deterring the Wii U from performing like the Wii, so clearly $15 dollars must make a pretty big difference among the casual market lol.

The fact that the Wii, which is basically dead at this point, is cannibalizing Wii U sales is just sad.

That episode was so incredibly awesome. Gotta love Sterling.
