Forums - Gaming Discussion - Nintendo : "Targeting Children Is NOT Enough" - Iwata mistranslated AGAIN !

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=760049

This is the neogaf page with verification from 2 seperate translators and the source of the original translation from DuelShockers.

There is no context to the statement but it apparently translates to:

"We haven’t been targeting children enough."

There ya go! Nintendo is Nintendo.

I'll just assume the hardcore ninty guys are clinging to their kiddy games.

'The approach towards children was insufficient' would be my literal translation. Even in English, this sentence could probably be interpreted both ways.

To all those saying that translators aren't doing their jobs properly, or just throwing it through google translate and accepting its word as gospel - stop. Japanese and English are very different languages, and very rarely align semantically. An automatic program is incapable of interpreting correctly. Japanese is supremely context based, and is ambiguous at the best of times. Just because there are two interpretations doesn't mean that people are going out of their way to be 'haters'.

(Disclaimer - I use Japanese more than English in daily life, but make no claims of fluency!)

They should focus on younger audiences more. I know that members here don't like that, but it's the smartest business choice in my opinion.

Everyone is out to get Nintendo. Confirmed!

I think we pretty much got that already.

There is a strong movement of people trying to sink Nintendo into 3rd party. A big lobby of people who favor the current american centric videogames market.

Iwata must be in on it then. Sabotage from the inside. Genius.

I would say you are part of that movement.

Hm, from my limited understanding the word for word translation does seem ambiguous, but in japanese it is actually missing the word  "だけ" or " のみ"  (both "just, only") for the sentence to be understood as "targeting (just) children is not enough".

'The approach towards children was insufficient', still confused, does he imply they need to approach other ages as well, or to focus even more on children?

in the case they will focus on children even more, makes perfect sense actually, Nintendo's main profit comes from Mario, Animal Crossing and other kid-friendly games, and not from Zelda and Metroid

Also, from my point of view, most Nintendo games are not kiddy, but kid-friendly I would say, so they are probably planning to make kid-only games, Mario Kart/SSB which is both core and kid-friendly

their approach is false I believe, Nintendo my dear, if you want to target kids, you have to make GTA, Call of Duty and Halo as well, except if you only want ages 4-8 which is too narrow to result in much more profit than it does now

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^
