Did you read the article? These arrangements are supposed to be transparent, you are not allowed to keep the advertisement a secret, thus the "Being investigated for FTC regulations" It is not the same as what others do. Still waiting for the other cases where this has happened........

Theres nothing secret about it!

Hello.

Obviously never even read the article, participants are NOT ALLOWED to say they were a part of a pormotion, which breaks FTC regulations.........MS already are blaming machima for it so they know it is wrong.

Oops. Sorry I didnt realise there was info edited. LOL.

The article says Machina wrote the E-mail. How is it saying is Microsofts fault? I doubt with all its lawyers and its years of experience with Advertising that MS would make such a BIG mistake.

I find it funny peoploe twisting this onto Microsoft when the E-mail never came from them. Typical..

EDIT: Machina got caughht out last E3 with something else in the same way. So twice its Machinima, but becaue its Xbox this time its somehow Microsoft being ilegal? Machinima will get done for it if anyone. Microsoft made no such NDA.

The tthread title should be changed to be in line with the article.

Do you think Machinima decided to advertise for Microsoft out of the goodness of their hearts?

Whether it's illegally or not, how can any consumer defend and advocate this procedure?

<Update (1:55 pm Eastern, Jan. 21): Machinima and Microsoft provided Ars Technica with the following joint statement on this story.

"This partnership between Machinima and Microsoft was a typical marketing partnership to promote Xbox One in December. The Xbox team does not review any specific content or provide feedback on content. Any confidentiality provisions, terms, or other guidelines are standard documents provided by Machinima. For clarity, confidentiality relates to the agreements themselves, not the existence of the promotion.">

It is true? i dont know, but i do know that in internet is easy to twist things, is easy to be biased against some company. Dont worry, Microsoft is the devil and everything that comes out of it is a danger to humanity

You know, normally people would look more thoroughly about who send the email and who put (or not) the confidentiallity agreement, but instead the internet go bananas about the topic

But of course, anybody that try to apply the benefit of the doubt is a xbox fanboy. Yes, i have a X360, but also a wiiu and a ps3 (and pc)

You knew MS or someone would try to blam this on machima. They didn't do this on their own.........

So, to compare your thought.

So, the drug dealer on the corner is not the problem, just the people who manufacture the drugs?

Every person invovled in something illegal(even though I think this is not illegal) are themselves doing something illegal.  What you want to do is pick and choose who is right and wrong.  If you believe that M$ is wrong in what they are doing, then all parties involved are wrong, even the people who watch the videos(after knowing why or how they were made).

Your example doesn't fit. Mostly because a drug dealer knows that he is doing is illegal. What the Youtubers did was still morally wrong though.

I will also say that it doesn't make sense in this case to blame the viewers because they weren't aware of the circumstances until after the "promotion" ended.

So now you know that every person who did this is thinking?  If you are paid to do something, you know that what you are doing will have some type of consequence.  Most People posting on here having quickly decided that this is wrong somehow.  So, why couldn't the youtubers come to the same conclusion if it is so obvious.

What this really boils down to is that M$ is giving a pittance of $$$ to people for favorably mentioning their product.  This happens thousands of times every hour of the day all over the world.  Yet, because the gamers don't really want to know how the world works around them and want to "just play games".  When they find out that the company or product that they were never going to buy anyway is advertising in a different way than they were aware of, they freak out.  This whole thing is no big deal and people need to get over it.

How did what I say give the impression I know what they were thinking in any way?

What it boils down to is that MS was paying people to make endorsment videos for there product under the guise of independent user impressions. Yet because you like the products that this certain company makes it is somehow ok even though it is obviously imoral and illegal.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Is this news?

Every single video game company, movie studio and record label does exactly the same thing all year round.

They say it's illegal

I wonder why no one action yet if it's illegal, seems it's easy money to get and you don't even need to be Xbox owner

They dont get caught though

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

Anyways it doesn't matter if this is illegal or not. It's already caused an uproar and backfired pretty badly. Anyone with half a brain could have seen this coming.

A really bad move by MS to allow this to happen especially after the year they just had.

They are once again shooting themselves in the foot.

If this is true we will most likely get an apology from Major Nelson saying something along the lines of "we didnt have any bad intentions we apologies for the misunderstanding", which is all great and stuff but they can really only say that so many times.

MS needs to start playing the game smarter. At least if you do something like this don't get caught out?

I don't think it's illegal, it's product integration and it existed for at least the last 6 years on youtube.
