Why is this a bad thing? MS is paying for advertising, no big deal.

If Youtubers are misleading people for money though, that isn't MS's problem.

This is an OTT example but if I pay a hitman to attempt to kill someone and they fail and I'm found out, do you think there would be no charges on me because I simply offered money for someone to break the law? I didn't do it myself?

If it was buying advertising that would be perfectly fine, but this is very clearly not just paying for some promotion, to not allow the youtubers to say anything bad about the system and not acknowledge the fact that the views they're expressing are not their own but a paid endorsement is the point where this becomes illegal. I bolded the anything to point out... if reviewing or talking about a game to get your money you're going to have to give it 100%, 10/10 , A+ whatever rank you use, because to give it lower suggests something about it is negitive and you get no monies.

Until this is cleared up a lot of people are going to be taking positive videos about the X1 and bundling them all up as Shrill advertisers and that is just wrong. There is actually a hell of a lot of people who legit love their new Xbox's and have a ton of videos about their cool new features and they're going to get shit rained on them because people will call them out as liars and paid advertisers, it undermines legit letsplayers and gamers.

Wow, horrible example. I'll ignore it.

It seems to me MS is paying people to make a commerical for their product. You don't have to mislead people to do that in my opinion. However, it seems like this is being compared to paying for positive reviews. Which is something completely different.

lol at the first bit and only portion I read of your comment. wow example of exactly what's going on here, I'll ignore it.

Paying someone to break the law is a crime in itself, also getting someone to sign a contract which in itself is breaking the law means the contract holds no value whatsoever. But feel free to ignore that too, keep in mind I'm referring to EU trade laws here not US ones so not sure if they would cover machinima but I know any of the European youtubers would not be able to sign into this form of advertising.

So a commercial that is coming from a reviewer, is staged as a review, and is found alongside all of their other real reviews?

Wait, that's a review.

The contract is not asking for a review. Its asking people to discuss a product and avoid saying anything negative. I can easily see the difference.

It's not directly MS who've done this stupid move, it's an outside advertising company they've hired for some PR. They could do with hiring a better advertising company for sure.... but this wasn't a thing which Microsoft did directly, since it's blown up kinda badly I can forsee Major N coming out and saying it was a bad move and a bad hire pretty soon about it.

Right now there is only speculation of a law being broken. Even if a law was broken, I don't have to agree it was unethical.

I don't feel this contract is asking users to mislead people. That's why I have no problem with it.

So basically this is Microsoft saying: "we are paying reviewers, bloggers, youtubers, and more to say that Xbox one is the best, and they can't say if they are being payed", so basically a sell out situation, and that would condone lying about Xbox one to sell consoles..

mM

If its a problem they will get sued. Why are you all worried past that point? They seem to be trying to counter all the garbage that has been thrown at them. Not everything they do is horrible. Some are but all this yield shit and down clocking etc........ was/is so stupid.

Without MS, Sony and NIntendo wouldn't work as hard to attract consumers.

Hence, lower quality games.

In your opinion. I feel a review is a much more in-depth analysis of a game.

I can discuss a game without reviewing it.
