You don't really believe that at all, do you?

It's on 2 platforms, and one is vastly more popular.  Why is this a crazy idea?

Yeah it wil get a small boost, but I'm not seeing a permanent one...

Well since ur friends don't want the Wii U version I guess no one will.

Yeah, people "prefer" to get Smash Bros. for 3DS, if they want a watered down game that honestly looks graphically worse than Brawl. And no matter what Sakurai says, I find it hard to believe the Wii U version won't have more content. By all rights, they certainly shouldn't cut/hold anything out of the Wii U version, what with it's BluRay disc capacity, just so it can be "on par" with a 3DS version that honestly/arguably shouldn't even exist.

If they had wanted to make SSB for 3DS, what they should have done was waited till after the Wii U game was made, focus ALL developmental resources/effort into the Wii U game, and then later, after it's done and released, start work on a separate, unrelated 3DS Smash game that is it's own thing. That way, the Wii U Smash would be exclusive, it would be a "bigger deal" (even though if you ask me most Smash fans are more excited for the Wii U version anyway), and they could not only reap the full sales potential from both a Wii U game, and then later a 3DS game that would still be guaranteed to sell.

I don't buy the idea that the 3DS version is going to "poach" too much of the potential sales from the Wii U game, though I certainly can see cheap and/or lazy gamers not caring about having the full blown experience and not wanting to buy a Wii U, getting the 3DS version and being happy with just that. But to me, I have a hard time imagining most Smash Bros. fans not considering the Wii U version to be what it is: The Main Version of the game, and being more enthusiastic for that. The Smash series has always been a home console franchise, just like the main Pokemon games have always been portable. I'm not personally AGAINST the idea of portable Smash, but they should not have made two versions of the same game. The Wii U game should be the only one coming out in the foreseeable future.

Gotta love when people come to conclusions about the potential success of multimillion selling franchises based on a sample size of like 3 people.

Nintendo shows their backwardness again by pulling this dumb move. This can really hurt the Wii U version's sales.

A smart move would have been to release it on Wii U and maximise it's sales then announce the 3ds version a couple months later.

It will. I actually think Nintendo doesn't care much about it (wii u sales), they know that a lot of Nintendo fans will buy both versions, at the end is more money for them.

smash bros is a console franchise. its biggest strength is playing with friends all on the same screen. that wont change, thats the main selling point of this game, just how fun it is to play with friends. so i dont think the 3DS version will hurt the WiiU one much.

Not a game I'm interested in at all but the sales figures for previous versions show it may boost hardware sales. So far these boosts haven't been as significant as was expected though for wii u.

In before the sony guys start flooding the thread with NO answers.

Based on my sample size of 3 people

we're all getting both the Wii U and the 3DS versions

oh, and another sample size of 2 people has them both getting ONLY the Wii U versions, which obviously means that no one wants an inferior handheld version where you don't even have an external gaming controller like we're all used to for Smash.

...

jokes aside I'm getting both and I know hardcore Smash or Nintendo fans with money will probably get both. I also think that a lot of people value the console version of the game more especially with its better graphics and overall functionality (sorry but the 3DS version most CERTAINLY will be inferior simply because of hardware limitations, its only major grabs are to make Smash portable and to rob people who want the 3DS-exclusive stages and stuff).

Ultimately Smash isn't quite as fun to me without being in the same room on the same screen. Even if you ignore the visuals, the controller, the setting, and the sound are also important, so the 3DS won't cut it for me except for sating my lust for Smash while I'm walking around campus or otherwise don't have access to my Wii U.

Just one perspective though, I'm sure some people will be okay with the 3DS version only, or some people might think they will and might get the Wii U version after a change of heart. IMO the best move Nintendo could make would be to sell the 3DS version a month after or something to force people to buy the Wii U version so they move consoles lol, the 3DS will move consoles regardless and has enough of an install base, prioritizing here might be kind of a dirty move from the fans' side but as a business move I think it might have some merit. :
