Forums - Gaming Discussion - Are the PS+ "free games" the crack that will bring down the industry?

I agree the change of mind of some people for online multiplayer behind a paywall was hilarious. I´ve tried out PS+ thanks to voucher (due to a mistake I still ended up paying 15 bucks for 3 months) but paying for online-multiplayer is still a no go to me.

Aaaaand the thread is derailed due to those fanboy sentiments that cannot give way to any other kind of conversation. Good job. I'm outta here.

This, I stole from grandpa...It's called soap.

im the kind of guy who waits for these games on psvita, mostly because allmost every AAA available goes to IGC.

I think OP is wrong about Sony having to pay more to acquire games, infact Sony have got themselves into a good position.
Basically what is happening is developers are getting extra revenue a whole year after launch for a game they dont expect to gain much more money from.
Looking at this, the other developers missing out are going to sony and asking for their old games to be put on PS+ too, giving sony more and more bargaining power, assuming only 2 games per platform can go on PS+ at once.

Extra revenue now and lower with next game in future. It's bad idea. Sony aim for poor gamers. Can poor gamers pay Sony's debts? I don't think so. Free online is another bad idea.

The thing is, the majority of the games PS+ offers are games that I would not have played otherwise.
Sure there are a few games offered that I already have or that I really wanted to play. But the majority of the games are things that I wouldn't go out of my way to play.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash

I got Plus and Gold and I don't download shit. I'm one of those guys that buys what he wants to play and I already have too much. I can't be alone, can I?

Exactly! I love boxes and games of my choice :)

PS+ games are either older yet highly acclaimed games or slightly newer, less popular games so my answer is NO.

I think it's a very dated and backward thinking view point to see something like PS+ as a danger to the industry - instead of viewing it as a huge opportunity to change the way we buy games in a way only beneficial to the consumer - and in turn those who supply the consumer. Much like how Netflix has removed everything consumers disliked about TV, and is now thriving, and Spotify is convincing millions of people to subscribe to their service - even though we could just download (albeit illegally) everything they offer for free.

Video games have this $60 day one at retail type model because historically that was the only way a publisher could get their games from their warehouse to the consumers homes. But that is a dated model from a by-gone era and while services like PS+ may ultimately kill that model - that will be for the benefit of the industry and not the detrement. Only those who don't adapt and evolve to the new business model are going to suffer.

I think it's foolish to predict what that business model is going to be and how games will make money in the future - because I doubt people could of envisioned a service like Netflix or Spotify in the 90's. But it'll happen, and given how amazing (I think, anyway) Netflix and Spotify are I'm excited to see where PS+ or whatever other services that appear take us!
