Forums - Sales Discussion - The official January NPD Thread

Come on people. Stop making this a fanboy war now, really!

The question is did VGchartz undertrack the Playstation 3 and overtrack the DS by this huge amount?

Well, first of all: DS. This one seems to be huge of by one of the trackers but I´d question the reliability of NPD beacuse of some facts: NPD had the DS lower than VGchartz in December but Nintendos shipment reports pretty much confirmed our numbers. Additionally if NPD reports lower December numbers and a sold-out DS in January...where did those units go that should´ve been in stock if NPD was right for December? And why should Nintendo face shortages in the US when Japan numbers have been down massively from last year?
You see, this is questionable.

Xbox 360: It is quite possible the Xbox 360 saw shortages in January and sold less than VGchartz reported therefore but whoever was interviewed from Microsoft said their channel was "slowly running empty" and he said that in February. Why didn´t Microsoft comment on those shortages in January?

Playstation 3: I know many PS3 fans have been waiting for higher numbers but after such a weak Christmas seasion it is doubtful that Playstation 3 sales suddenly picked up that much without the release of any big games for it and the price cut months ago.

I do not believe those NPD numbers not because of being a fan of a certain console but because they do not seem logical at all. And yes I really mean that.

Do you live on the same planet as us?I mean come one ,,give credit where it's due,,,PS3 did not have a weak holiday season

On the other hand I am more trusting of VGC numbers because unlike NPD VGC has shown a willingness to admit to mistakes and change data to reflect new data  to support my bias.

Fix'd

I lol'd.

Now seriously, don't jump on Avinash_T. I mean even Sony-fans should be wondering if it's really possible that the change pattern changed so drastically from Dec to Jan, which was a slow month with no big releases. I'm suggesting that logic says, that the true figure - if NPD was overtracking the PS3 a bit - should remind more of past numbers, which have far less impressing PS3 numbers. What I'm saying is that it's not nessecarily a fanboy argument.

If their numbers are closer to actual sales then they would be more accurate

So Im still asking, what makes you sure 100% confident that the Vgchartz is more credible than the NPD. Right now youre just laying out your personal opinion and prefering VGchartz over the NPD. Why?

Im quite curious.

Yeah, NPD is not accurate. No way that damn dirty Playstation can sell that close to the Wii. Sony droping out of the console market=confirmed! Time to celebrate with Gamer Girl.

@ Louie

ps3 didn't have a weak christmas.

and i do believe that the numbers for ds are a bit weird. if they are true then maybe ds is actually reaching saturation pointin us and jp? but i doubt it. numbers need to be looked at again.

Ah, I never said I was 100% confident of VGC numbers, just that I trust them more, as they have more transparency of their figures, plus the fact that they were more accurate than NPD in december, as a result I am more trusting of what they say than what NPD says, now if it turns out that NPD is right, then so be it, ioi will probably adjust based on the new data, but if VGC is right, you'll never get a peep out of NPD

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! No truth handler, you. Bah! I deride your truth handling abilities!

Last I heard the PS3 was dead. NPD must've forgotten that. ;(

I think I do, yes. Not sure about your home planet, though

I was solely talking about America where the Playstation 3 was by far the worst selling home console. I won´t give it "credit" there. But I will give it credit in Europe where I expect it to sell very well and my Japan predictions for the system are also much higher than some would think.

Why do people always think I´m bashing this system?

Was it Gamer girl that said "Sony droping out of the console market=confirmed!"? Because there was a =( after the sentence which would suggest that she intended to write MS instead of Sony. And the X360 numbers were shitty IMO (only those speculated shortages can comfort me a little), so more logical would be that MS is the one who must rethink their business after seeing those Jan numbers (although I'm confident that they have a plan which will beat Sony in 2008).
