weaveworld said: Seems like story based games do not get much support nowadays. So sad... All these incredible games mentioned in this thread and nothing in the Ps3 era to make up for it (honorable mention to Nier and Valkyria Chronicles) besides PSN golden oldies! Every single game mentioned in this thread deserves a 'thumbs up'. Now personally, Xenogears and after that Xenosaga both had stories that really interested me. They went deep you know... Slightly below but still very intruiging : SO3 and FF6 to 10 And then... : Shadow Hearts, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Lunar SSS and more from my personal golden age of gaming |
Its the simple scarcity of JRPGs on console for the longes. None of them unfortunately hold a candle to the stories told of old. Demon's Souls is quite good but its nothing like most JRPGs. Valkyria Chronicles over all war plot is decent, it really excells at characterization and weaving it into gameplay(like how certain characters work together in battle). VC is only ever out done in that respect by the Persona games in my opinon.
NiNoKuni has a nice light hearted story too. It gets deep if you believe the theory that Oliver is having a nervous/emotional breakdown to cope with his mother's death and the entire game exists in his imagination. The entire story is built using real peopl he knows with fairy tale like elements to help him cope.
Most JRPGs of this gen just excel at combat system. Haven't played Tales of Xillia yet but I'll be able to judge on that soon once I pick it up Black Friday for $20 at gamestop.
