I can't go a generation without a 3D Zelda no matter how fun top down Zeldas might be (actually enjoying ALBW).

Excluding the Super Nintendo, every Nintendo home console has had two mainline Zelda games. As Little Taco Commercial Girl once said in her infinite wisdom, "why don't we have both?"

And even though I was, like, thirteen back then, I remember people all over the Internet going all "oh, a game like New Super Mario Bros. Wii will never sell on a home console", and "this looks like a lazy DS port, the home consoles should be reserved for proper 3D Mario games". I'm just throwing that out there.

Just in case I wasn't clear enough, I fully endorse the OP's suggestion. I mean, christ, so far there have been two traditional top-down Zeldas on the home consoles. The last on was in 1992. That ain't right.

1. Zelda is not Mario not even close, it wouldnt have the same effect two

2. 3d Zelda is actually MORE popular than 2d Zelda despite what some might want to believe, the best selling Zelda is a 3d one OOT

3.Why do we NEED a 2d Zelda on a home console? What will it being on the home console add to the experience that couldnt be done on the portable, its not like their is a Multiplayer mode where people could gather around the TV to better ultilize, serious question not trying to be a dick

I dont see Ninty doing this, they still need to sell people on the gamepad and i dont think a 2d Zelda would really utilize it, but i like the idea that someone said before have it 3d but use the gamepad as map and it will be in 2d. Dont think Ninty can pull that off though, hell i dont think anyone can pull that off.

I love the top-down style of ALBW and I am surprised at how cool the 3D is for that type of game.

But I have say I'd be against this and that this would probably really hurt the franchise and Nintendo. I'm all for more top down titles on the 3DS and future handhelds, but on consoles deliver those big, epic, and thrilling 3D adventures.

I disagree. I'm not against the occasional 2D Zelda on home consoles and 3D Zelda on handhelds, but as the 'next primary installment' of the series, home console should be 3D and handheld should be 2D.

That would be stupid.

Top down on the Game Pad and 3rd person on the screen with the option to switch.

This was going to be my suggestion too. Zelda U needs to look amazing to show the consoles potential while a top down view on the gamepad will be practicle and nostalgic. Hope we get some info soon.

Yeah, you can't compare Mario and Zelda when it comes to this. Zelda is also supposed to show us what a Wii U can do, and a 2D Zelda wouldn't be capable of doing that.

Unless you're counting the remakes of OOT the best selling is actually TP, at least if you add up the numbers of the gamecube and the WIi version. Doesn't matter though, just another game that have sold more than all the 2D Zeldas. We already know that the realistic Zeldas sells the most, and Nintendo needs that now. 2D Zelda on handhelds is fine, but they need that 3D on homeconsoles.

Dear god no. Leave top down Zelda on the handhelds.

I love 2d zelda but my favorite Zelda's are 3d.

Skyward Sword is my 2nd favorite zelda tied with majora mask. First of course be OOT.

Maybe a more apt idea would be a 3D Land/World approach to Zelda. Mix elements of 3D and 2D. 3D Zelda needs a lot of the aspects of 2D Zelda to return to greatness in my opinion.

How would you go about achieving this? What gameplay elements would you combine from the 2D and 3D games?

Perhaps a flexible isometric camera angle that can change viewing direction to 4 locked places. Gives you limited camera control for puzzling and exploration but it won't get in the way. Add lock-on targetting to that, expand on the new energy meter for all items (perhaps some enemies only get hurt using 2-3 items in quick succession, requiring a full energy bar).

The right stick could now be used for Link's new mechanic instead of handling the camera, preferably something more active along the lines of turning into a painting rather than making music, something that can be an integral part of combat, exploration and puzzling, Zelda's 3 main features.
