Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft: Valve’s Steam Box Approach Validates Ours With Xbox One

Microsoft should totally bring it back!..

I agree. Let's be honest. A good portion of the people that hated were never going to buy the xbox1 to begin with. Valve has pretty much the same DRM and notice how 24 hours later, the internet is not flooded with hate against them.
I actually prefer being able to switch between games without swapping out discs. Wii U is the first console I have owned in a long time because I can go all digital. I still love my PC. While I am typing this, I have youtube open, Rift running, Civ5 at the end of the turn and Rosetta stone waiting for me to come back. Now I know some of that has nothing to do with gaming but it helps me be able to multi task. Once you get use to not being tied down to disc or 1 program at a time, its hard to go back.

I will never own a MS console but I don't have any issues with their DRM policy and I welcome it.

Rest assured if Sony had announced it, the internets wouldn't have exploded. It would have been heralded as the next big thing in gaming. Instead people used it as a reason to hate and stopped the advancement on consoles in the process.

That sums it up really. With every console this gen you can go all digital, but you don't have to. MS tried to force everyone to go all digital, but if someone wants that they can do it anyway. The only people who this affected were the people who actually prefer to buy retail, who obviously don't want this.

Thing is if you look at history people always fought advancement. When radio was invented book lovers fought it. When TV came along radio lovers fought it. When CDs came along record lovers hated it. It never has stopped advancement and never will though

By validation does he mean DRM? If its yes then I guess microsoft may introduce DRM again in XBox One in future. I am scared of digital only or cloud only future.

That's one perspective. However, this is what I read from it.

DRM on Xbox One, "Booooooo! MS is evil and greedy!"

DRM on Steambox, "Yay, I love Valve!"

You arent alone. I got that too.

Since it was MS a lot of Sony fans jumped on the hate wagon.

Now that it is Valve they are lost on what to do. They really dont want to mess with PC fanboys. we will make every excuse they used to justify PS4 seem trivial and biased.

Hating MS is the new thing to do to be cool. Hating Valve on the other hand isnt, Nor so much this site of course, wgile it does have its MS haters, they have to do so with reason or expect to be banned.

No.  He means by making the Xbone focused more on being an entertainment center then just a pure gaming console.

The Xbone is more or less designed to run your entire living room.

While the PS4 is just more... games.

So therefor isn't the PS4 in more danger from the new Steam Box than the Xbox One as most of what the PS4 does is just games, like for the most part the Steam device, where the Xbox One has the games, motion tracking, Skype, plus a whole bunch of other functions.

Plus the Steam thing is still evolving.  I'm sure there will be some more changes by the time it hits the market next year.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.

Top 50 'most fun' game list coming soon!

Tell me a funny joke!

If Sony had announced it the internet would have exploded just as much P:

Steam can get away with the DRM because they are on a platform (PC) which people are unlikely to own without an internet connection. Steam is also not always on DRM, which is what people had the biggest problem with. I don't mind having to connect once when i log onto Steam and then going into offline mode, but having to have a connection at all times is bothersome. MS tried to rush the market rather than slowly transition over, which resulted in the backlash we have seen.

Also, you can go pretty much entirely digital on any console P: (except the Wii xD)

You are absolutely correct. Now its cool to talk anti-microsoft. I wont deny that I didnt do the same thing.

But there is another thing I want to add. Its about perception of gamers (In marketing we call it as positioning, which is basically capturing a distinctive place in the consumers mind). When we think of consoles we perceive it as a device in which we can "put the game" and play. By putting the game in console we still understand getting physical games. When I was a kid I understood playing games means putting game cartiges in the console (SNES).

1) Here, me and general public understand consoles "mainly" play retail games and have no "restrictions".

2) Since its creation valve has established themselves as a digital distributor. There is DRM but valve allows us offline play. People are used to that and nobody complains about it.

Now come to present. Now everything is mixing up and new ideas are emerging. $60 games are now adopting microtransactions or games are released part by part (the walking dead). Thats why console manufacturers are also trying to adopt valve's model. But many people still perceive consoles as a device that can play physical games and without DRM. And rest of other people are joining the mainstream. Thats why many people hates microsoft. Its all about perception.
