I feel as though the 3DS' failure didn't affect the Vita at all. Sony has called the shots on their system, and they were bad ones that didn't work. Sony is not helping the Vita, and now the 3DS' dominance isn't either.

I hope you see my point.

I see your point, but wouldn't you speculate that had the 3DS done better off the bat, Sony still had the time to turn the ship around and change its strat when it had launch momentum?

This assumes that the tablet will suddenly catch on, and Sony and MS will wish that they had one. It won't, and they won't.

Even if the Wii U mounts an unlikely 3DS style comeback, it will be down to games and not the controller. The tablet will probably be about as relevant as the 3DS' 3D, maybe slightly more.

Nintendo will profit and sell well but they will struggle to sell as well as Sony and Microsoft. Without a peripheral gimmick and little third party support this seems to just be their curse.

I think Sony and Microsoft will succeed off the back of the gimmick that is glorified graphics. Without that they can't do well.

The question is - if the Wii U was successful, would it be due to the controller?

The Wii was such a major hit BECAUSE of its controller. The Wii U obviously doesn't have that impact... if it sold well, it would be likely due to the games, not the controller.

I don t think that Wii U will be a success as Wii was...
I hope so that a price drop (approximately when PS4 will be out) and a good games line up will make it healthy...
I consider Wii U as the 3ds case...

The problem with the controller is that it is not used for the games... It is totally ignored...
They should have immediately at the console's launch a Mario Kart using the controller as wheel or a Star Fox using the screen and the whole controller as the driving panel. Not just Nintendo Land!

I'm pretty sure the Vita can mimic like 90% of the Wii U pads capabilities. The thing is, like the Xbox One and Kinect, the touchscreen controller is packed with every Wii U console. When software that makes great use of the controller appears and shows that the controller was a good idea, people will appreciate it. I think that software is coming (even Arkham City hints at what is to come) just like how awesome Kinect 2.0 software should be in the works.

No, just no. Fact is the gen pop dont care about the gamepad, if they did the Wii U would be doing MUCH better. Wii sold on the controller the gamepad isnt and Sony and MS see that so they wont mimic, why mimic something that very little actually care about? Thats throwing money away. Just like very few actually cared about the 3d in 3DS, you have to be eating those crazy brownies to think that if the WIi U turns it around it will be cause of the pad, nope. It will be because of games and or a price drop, just like 3DS. People didnt just started caring about the 3d all of a sudden.

Thats not a gimmick. Graphics are the visual backbone of the evolution of gaming.

I think that value-adds like the wiimote and the ds touch screen are the backbone of the evolution of gaming, like the d-pad and the analog stick were before them.

Graphics are a gimmick and are the only way Sony and Microsoft were able to beat Nintendo last gen. They also need 3rd parties to survive.
