Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft: Every Xbox One Can Be Used To Make Games (Self Publishing)

Every single Xbox One can be used to make games, Microsoft says—in other words, you can use the next-gen console as your very own development kit.

The Xbox 360 was a closed system, but it appears that its successor will be far more open. In a statement to Kotaku today confirming news that leaked earlier on Game Informer, Xbox's corporate vice president Marc Whitten said that all Xbox Ones will function as development kits, which are usually only available to licensed developers.

Here's Microsoft's official comment:

Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We'll have more details on the program and the timeline at gamescom in August.

Nice... and the DevTools, APIs and documentation will be free to? I want to know more about.

Self publishing is good but the news that every XboxOne can be turned into a devkit is really interesting. It was my understanding that devkits usually differ in the amount of ram they have, I wonder if MS is thinking that they can use the cloud to make up for this or if current consoles have so much ram that it's unnecessary for devkits to have even more.

...

That's legit. So not only can indie developers do self publishing, but they can use the retail console as a dev kit as well. Idk about anyone else, but that $500 price tag doesn't seem that bad now.

I'm ready a little more... seems like a limited to Window RT App Program... the App OS.

+ You can use only the Windows APP OS and its 3GB reversed memory.

Edit - More... that's official.

UPDATE: But not at launch. Microsoft's Marc Whitten just told us that devkit functionality will be added at a later date.

Seems like MS is revising all the Xbone plans from zero... so the new plans needs do be developed.

I can see this is a great idea, let people (if they can) develop for themselves but I just don't get MS, why not tell us this earlier? Why allow all the bad press about Indies?

This one small article does not say they are reversing their policies on indie developers, if they knew this was going to be a part of the Xbone why not tell the indies and have their support?

EDIT: *reads above post* Ah, because hey only just decided... maybe amends, for some indie devs who just wanted a dev kit, it might be to little too late.

Hmm, pie.

Because I don't think they were expecting Sony to have such an open approach with Indies. They probably just started talking about this after hearing what Sony was doing.
