To answer the poll, Super Mario Galaxy is pure gameplay masterpiece at it's finest, meanwhile The Last of Us is only storytelling/character development at it's finest. It pains me to see that today's so called gamers look at shallow things like story and voice acting to let them selves get hypnotised/brainwashed into thinking that a game is good or not. Gameplay>>>>Story and TLOU had nothing special whatsoever in the gameplay department.

Best Action/ Adventure Games: Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Best Fighting Games: I don't play those much, Super Smash Bros Brawl was the only one I really liked. By far the most fun for me but I would'nt say it's the best cause it has it's share of flaws.
Best First Person Shooting Games: Bioshock
Best Platforming Games: Super Mario Galaxy2
Best RPG Games: Xenoblade Chronical
Best Third Person Shooters: Uncharted2
Overall Best Games: Really hard to choose cause all genres are so different. But like I said, Galaxy is pure gameplay and level design masterpiece, so I'd go with this game.

Why would it pain you and why do you get to decide what makes the game good. I happen to really like games with good story/acting.

Best game this gen? The Last of Us hands down.

I'll make a detailed genre list later.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

If the last of us proved something is that its too early to be telling who is the best. The gen is not over.

What would you consider a game like Watch dogs to be for example? New or current gen?
I find it funny how many people want to move on from current gen when its not over yet. I hope you're also prepared for some software drought after the new consoles launch. ^^
Its all so impatient....

It's my opinion. Looking back, gamers loved games like Banjo Kazooi, Ocarina of Time and Spyro because their levels/puzzles and everything related to gameplay was great. This is what makes someone a great video game maker, the ability to make a game that is creative and fun to play. Making a cool cutscenes with good hired voice actors does'nt make you a good video game maker, those are all shallow things in my opinion.

This is why I tend to move more and more away from the AAA titles and go towards the indie games. The AAA surface is getting more and more like Hollywood blockbusters wich imo is crap. To show exactly how I feel let's compare the Uncharted trilogie to the Metroid Prime trilogie. Let me first say that I loved both trilogies. You have on one side UC, filled with explosions in the background and cutscenes every 5mins, a charismatic protagonist with great voice acting that never shuts up (I love drake he is funny but I'm using this point for the sake of the comparaison), and really great story given to the player in the form of a 8hour long extremely linear game. On the other side you have MP, no voice acting, Samus is totaly silent during the entire 20hours of gameplay. When you play, it's mostly you, wandering around in a silent world, solving occasional puzzles and facing the occasional enemies in your path, meaning no jokes, no explosions, no cutscenes with samus falling off a cliff or something like that. Meanwhile the story is a really good story but is shallow to the experience, the storytelling is almost non existant and it is possible to play the entire game w/o knowing the story if you choose so and you will still end up loving that game. The storytelling is in the form of scans for those who are really interested in the lore. But what this game have is perfectly inserted metroidvania progression, with constant feeling of getting stronger, clever boss fight/puzzles/powerups and great level design in a open world.

So my point? Comparing UC to MP would be like comparing the Transformers movies to Life of Pi. Is Transformers a better movie than Life of Pie? If you are a young teenagers that all that matters to you is hot chicks and explosions then your answer will be ''yes''. But if you are cinema lover you will most likely agree with me that Transformers is utter crap. Then why did Transformers make tons of money more than Life of Pi? Because Transformers attracts the lowest common denominator. Everyone can enjoy Transformers because it can be enjoyed by total idiots, all you need is sit down and drool like a idiot in front of the special effects.

Ok, my comparison is not 100% accurate because Transformers is total garbage and I don't think in anyway that the Uncharted games are total garbage. I picked these to make my point as clear as possible. I thought UC games are great the same way that they are some lowest common denominator blockbuster movies that are also great (Nolan's Darkknight trilogie for example). But I choosed UC for my example cause imo it's the game that represent best this new tendency of AAA games to become more and more like hollywood blockbusters.

IMO, just like the movie industry, ppl tend more and more to forget what makes a great game and we should'nt judge games like movies, we should judge games the same we judge games like Super Mario Bros 3 or Crash Bandicoot. Special effects and non stop actions does'nt make a good movie, they are only shallow bonuses. The same way that good actors does'nt make a great video games, they are only shallow bonuses.

When I look back, sure It's easier for me to have great memories of Uncharted. I can remember how epic it was when the train crashed and how funny Drake's jokes were and how was Drake's and Elena's relationship. Meanwhile trying to remember a game like Galaxy I can only try to remember how the levels were but it's really hard for me to remember how it felt playing them, I can only try to remember some of their designs (and they are 242 of these levels so remembering them all is imposible). If Galaxy had a great story and voice acting would it have made the game more memorable, probably since it's easy to remember epic moments and plotwists that it is to remember gameplay and level designs. Would it have made it a better game? No.

To conclude, 1final example that just came up into my mind. I'm one of those who thinks Journey is slightly overrated. But it's pure gameplay added with some ''awww'' inspiring visuals. No voice acting or story. Compare it to The Walking Dead. Great story, great characters but playing that game has NOTHING special in a gaming point of view. You litteraly do nothing but press a button once in a while, yet this game is being praised not because it's a great game, but because it's a great tv show or movie but it happened to be in the form of a game so it's considered to be a great game. TWD winning GOTY over journey is a disgrace IMO. The fact that it's a great movie in the form of a game does'nt make it a great game. But it's easier for the lowest common denominator to remember how great those plot twists were than it is to remember how great Journey was. You don't remember what made Journey great, you can only feel it WHILE playing it. THAT'S what makes a great game, same thing for Galaxy or Banjo Kazooi.

So TLOU, you remember how great the story was and blahblahblah. But gameplay wise, do they have the best programers in the industry? Gameplay has nothing special or never seen before with some clunky AI...(not gonna say that programmers are bad tho, is a really well made game in that department, just not masterpiece like ppl claim, atleast not in that department) So what does that game have? Great writers? Great voice actors? Hmmm...not exactly what we have in mind when we think of video games makers do we.. Words like ''writers'' and ''actors''...

I see your point and I respect you opinion, but that's what it is: an opinion. It's condescending of you to think that people who prefer these types of games not real gamers.

Hmm, I think it's when I used the words ''so called gamers'' that you did'nt like. I agree that maybe I should'nt have used these words. But I used them not to point fingers at anyone but because I think that their is no where near as many real gamers as ppl think.

I personaly know many ppl that have a PS3 and aside from their yearly sports game, they may have 4 or 5games. And what are those 4 or 5games? The big blockbusters games that been highly advertised. TLOU is included, it's so hyped  and you can see adds averywhere so offcaurse those guys I'm talking about will add it to their small collection along GoW3, CoD and Battlefield. They will love TLOU and think it's the best game ever because it's the best mainstream lowest denominator game that they played among their small collection.

These ppl that only have 4 or 5 mainstream games are those I was refering to as ''so called gamers''. They think they are gamers but they are not. And they are alot of them on every gaming websites. I'd go as far as to say that they are the majority. I think the majority of ''gamers'' in gaming websites are these ppl I'm talking about. I'm not pointing at anyone cause I have no idea who they are. I'm also not saying that if you voted for TLOU or UC that you are automaticaly one of these ppl cause that would be totaly wrong from my part because I can see how ''real gamers'' can fall in love with these games. What I'm saying is that both ''real'' and ''so called''(wich I think are the majority on the internet) can enjoy games like TLOU, meanwhile to totaly appreciate games like Xenoblade or Galaxy you need to be a ''real gamer''(and that does'nt mean that if you did'nt like those games that you are automaticaly not a ''real'' gamer offcaurse). Because ''so called'' gamers will usualy simply dismiss games like Xenoblade for not being mainstream enough and being to hard to complete or will dismiss games like Galaxy for being to ''childish'' or will simply play Galaxy but will not get past World3.

I did'nt mean that liking these types of games makes you a not real gamer, I meant that alot of not real gamers likes these types of games and that imo they are more vocal on the internet that most ppl would think. But I understand that my post was'nt clear and I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

There's always been games with (debatably) inferior gameplay that was loved... like final fantasy 6, Earthbound, games that are awesome, but can generally be beaten by spamming x, and have less strategy than pretty much every RPG, western or other japanese ones in existance. Or Planescape Torment whose gameplay mechanics were inferior to other RPG's at the time, (though the way the story branches, you could consider that part of the gameplay and it thus the gameplay is no longer inferior).

I personally agree with you on your opinion on the Last of US, though I give the gameplay a bit more credit. But some people might prefer the more heavily integrated story in their gameplay. Afterall it is a videogame, not just game, not just video :).

Handheld games obviously count, the PSP and the NDS were also from this generation...
by the way...

Best handheld game: Daxter

They weren't really, both will have been superseced for at least 2 years when the PS4 and XB1 come out
