Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Will putting kinect in every box really change anything?

I never had a problem with Kinect coming in the box, my problem was with the DMR and used games. Unlike the DRM previously, the Kinect can be turned off. I think it's a good thing to include Kinect because that way developers can come up with really neat ideas and not have to worry about a low attach rate. It also is what really differentiates the X1 and Ps4 because without it there would even less of a difference than the ps3 and 360.

The idea is to have all games and consoles to have 100% universal support, no breaking up user base.

Plus it has a casual appeal and god forbid we use its features for pure convienence.

But hey, MS can price drop if they have to. They certainly can afford to.

Is that quote in your sig real? lol

But the kinect must be plugged in. That irks me just as much as DRM. It feels like MS is once again removing choice from consumers. Why would they require it to be plugged in for x1 to work? Because they know that if they didn't gamers would sell it immediately. When you have to do crap like that to force something on people then clearly there is something wrong. If it is truly compelling people will seek it out. You shouldn't have to force it down our throats.

I actually think that having a Kinect in every box will also help the PS4 out. Since it's a standard in every Xbox One and a dev uses it's abilities, why not modify it to work on the PSEye also? They already spent the resources of utilizing it on the One. So instead of an afterthought, it's automatic. I'm talking about multiplats.

It was a wise move by Sony to not include the Eye, because MS is already making way for the developement. Sony is able to sell there console for $100 cheaper and make it more appealing to the masses, while also benefiting from Microsoft standardization.

Thats actually an interesting observation. Sony is playing this chess game perfectly.

Of course they can afford to, but a loss is always a loss. Plus they targeted at casuals, wich don't buy many games per definition. How would they cover the losses without selling a lot of games to them ?

If Xbone make a big loss, investors will want MS to sell Xbox brand, and that's not the goal here.

In essence, by playing it as safe as one can get.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

One mans gimmick is another mans advantage. I think the majority fear change. Innovation is change. Therefore the majority fears innovation. Kinect will be amazing when a developer spends the time developing the right game for it. That can only happen if the attach rate is high. So yes. Kinect will change things. It's only a matter of time.

That didn't really work out for the WiiU. Unlike the kinect with xbone the gamepad has been a central part of the marketing for the WiiU from day 1 and still nothing compelling has come out of it. Third party developers are barely trying anymore. Just because its bundled with every box does not guarantee support from developers.

Wrong!  In the case of WiiU, every developer is required to have off-tv play or gamepad features of some kind.   Where did you get your information?

@wilco... if it's packed with every SKU to whom would they be selling it ?????

Just like a controller is necessary to play games, MS wants Kinect necessary for the console. The majority of people that with buy the X1 will use kinect in some way; either watching tv, turning on there console, or playing games. If someone is really paranoid that MS is spying on them just turn it off, wrap it up with duck tap, and face it the other direction. Other wise the good of having Kinect far outweigh the bad.

That probably would be true if both devices operated the same but they do not.  It will be much easier for MS to give a little fund for developers to use Kinect in their games compared to developers adding the same features to Sony product when the install base is a wild guess.  Always remember time is money and i a developer isn't getting paid for it or can confirm enough install base then its not worth their time, money or resources to do it.
