Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Things that are made worse with todays Xbox One DRM change

I really dont understand why some people think its a crime for the video game industry to have a 2nd hand market while alot of other industries do have a 2nd hand market and are thriving/ maybe some of these companies need to rethink their business models.

because it's a much bigger problem for video game industry as for music/movie industry who have other ways to get money (concerts, radio, pay tv, free tv, cinema tickets) and because a used game is still exactly the same as a new game. a used car is clearly worse as a new one.

it would have been pretty cool. But now we can sell games we beat or dont like.

Used games create more money to be spent on games. Its removal will only result in less games being purchased/played and thus actually lower revenue for devs/publishers.

Its the same reason used products exist in every other market and have for.. well ever.

If MS who makes the damn console can come to term with this mess, why can't some of its fans?

Let it go, they were in the wrong and are trying to move away from it. You guys should too. Now fans will have choices, unlike when MS dictated what to do with games people would purchase.

I will skip the whole sharing thing since we don't know exactly how taht was going to work, but it most likely would have been awesome. Here are some of the things I can think of.

1. Disc based games do not sync with the cloud or show up in your library profile

http://www.engadget.com/2013/06/19/xbox-one-drm-marc-whitten/

Going to a friends place to play Halo 5 which you bought on disc? You will have to have your profile on a USB if you want the controller profile or game save to be there. Your digital profile will not have your settings for this game available.

2. Fragmenting of a gaming library

Only digital purchases show up in your profile. If next gen consoles are backwards compatible or there is no next gen much like there is no "next gen" for PCs, your gaming library will be partly digital partly disk based. If disk drives go away, so does your gaming library

3. Digital purchases can only be made on xbox Live.

For those that want to avoid disks like the plauge (like me), they can not take advantage of Best buy and Walmart clearances of games to buy digital games. Retail bought games are locked to the disk and not my Xbox Live ID. Intead the only place we can hope to get deals from is Xbox Live marketplace.

4. Disk swaps and verification checks for no functional reason other than to enforce DRM

Self explanitory. I'd rather have internet do something so I don't have to.

5. Gamestop and Publishers can keep screwing users with used games and passes

Gamestop loves the new direction Xbox One is taking. Wonder why...

1) you don't know that. Its very likely disc bases saves and profiles will sync. You'll just need to bring disc and login.
2) MS has already ended any hope for BC on its consoles. So this is a non-issue. Nintendo will likely even follow suit next gen considering MSony both have.
3) Again you don't know that. You can buy digital slips for games for Nintendo consoles and I'm sure the same will exist for others... as well as just buying value based cards for redemption. Non issue again.
4) Disc swaps... if you don't want to deal with a disc... don't buy one. All games will be available digitally. You can have your exact features you desire that way.

5) This is a massive misnomer on your end. This is why I've pulled it out from the other four.
GS was a ripoff because people were stupid and traded/bought from them. If MS policies went through these types of non-deals would be the ONLY choice you have as you were forced to use Gamestop/BestBuy/Amazon/Walmart/etc for trade-ins and used gaming.

However, now you have the real choice of still using person to person, Craigslist, eBay, etc. That is where the real deals are for used games anyways. Selling and buying a game is ALWAYS a better deal through person to person channels than any retailer. Better for the seller and buyer. Your want for MS policy would have destroyed this option and definitely cost resellers/used buyers more.

1. It clearly states that disc based games will not sync with your profile in that article. While saves and settings still may sync its not very likely.

2. MS has ended for BC compatibility in 10 years when next set of hardware hits the market? How?

3. When you go look for sales, you buy whats on sale. You're saying people have to go to best buy and look for game deals and then pray that some of those deals apply to digital slips and game codes? Yeah...

4. Easier said than done. Buying a disk can be more convenient and cheaper. Less install time... People will give you disks as gifts. WTF do I do with those? Sell them and re-buy the games digitally?

5. Most people don't have time to post ads and deal with strangers on subway lines to resell games. Ideal digital reselling would by far be the best option. Whoever does this in the near future will start a revolution.

Your post brings nothing to the discussion dude. My points still stand...

On another note, the pressure to enforce disc checking over DRM has made Microsoft do Sony's bidding to keep BluRay relevant for the next several years...

Yeah. Thanks.

I'm not a Microsoft fan or a Sony fan. Now I probably won't get the Xbox One till its cheaper or at all and I for sure won't get the PS4.

Thanks.

Am I the only one who thinks GameStop is a good company for gamers?

People have different experiences. Every time I go there to trade something I feel like I got raped by Pyramidhead.

How can you have me buy a brand new game at launch for 60 bucks and then say "its not a very good game....20 dollar trade in value" when I try to trade it less than 7 days later?

Thats why I stopped trading games. I have no time to chase people on craigslist and going to Gamestop and bestbuy is an insult.

Can you haggle at Gamestop though?

No. The only good thing they have is trade 3 get 1 free deals.

But even those tend to be very skewed. Yeah I'll trade 3 games you guys want that are in high demand, for 1 new game that you won't accept next week cause it isn't selling...
