I think it would work much better if the tablet controller was it's own separate system. The PS4 + Vita combination will do the same thing and blow it out of the water.

I think we need to wait for that, its a cool thing but no one knows for sure if it will be something huge, besides ps4 + vita is much more expensive that just a wii u

Wii HD: Simply branded, the wii but with better graphics and media functionality (bluray). The console could have shipped with a tradition 360 styled gamepad (for 3rd party games like AC) and wiimote+. Marketing would have been easy and the price more approachable at $250 ($300 if nintendo wanted day1 profit).

Nintendo: Maybe they could have gone for a traditional powerhouse console and retackled their approach with the N64 but with better execution? Risky, but look at how Microsoft has morphed the xbox brand and appeal between generations and even the 2nd half of the 360s life.

I think going with an improved wiimote and a camera as good or better than kinect would have been better.

True. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Not a fan, especially considering it tacks on to the cost of the hardware. Unlike the Wiimote, I don't feel like this thing is needed for certain games, or that it adds any excitement or interest. I think Nintendo just feels the need to tack on some crazy new gimmick for each new console they release now, regardless of whether or not it really adds anything.

I suppose it could prove useful for certain RPGs and RTS games, but how many of those are we even going to see on the Wii U?

Actually, there may be more people with both a Vita and a PS4 by the end of the year, then with a Wii U. The remote play feature on the Vita might make some people buy it just for that. That is their main angle right now to bring it to more people.

Yeah I guess it would've been better if they made the 3DS compatible for everything the WiiU pad is currently doing.
The effect of having it priced $100 lower than now would very likely attract more people than the mandatory gamepad will ever do.

I dislike the gamepad, mostly because it goes back to using thumstick controls. Nintendo was innovative with the Wii, with motion controls. Why undo that advancement. Sure, some games you can use a wii controller, but for some you can't at all. Thumbstick controls are old technology, motion controls are new-ish still, why go back 10 years?

Nintendo tried too hard to beat Apple to the punch, and in turn, gave people something they didn't really want.

I was always against it for one main reason. Battery life. The thing is huge. They should of put more than one battery inside it to offset the time limit you get on the controller.

Was reading this article by the Times and it reminded of why the wii U is $350 and not £250 or even less; The gamepad. Here are a few excepts from the article...

"In Super Mario 3D World, for example, you can touch the screen to interact with certain objects, such as POW blocks. This makes the game slightly easier in a handfu l of areas, but it was essentially a glorified cheat button. In Mario Kart 8, the touchscreen includes a horn and a way to switch between controller types. You can also view a map and see which items other players are carrying, but it’s too difficult to look down at this information while driving. Putting this information on the TV screen would be more helpful..... It makes me wonder whether Nintendo is setting the stage for a low-cost, GamePad-free version of the Wii U. Given that the GamePad isn’t essential to Nintendo’s upcoming games, and that it doesn’t have much support from other publishers.http://techland.time.com/2013/06/14/even-nintendo-is-stumped-by-the-wii-u-gamepad/

To add to these lack luster functions, big games like Pikmin 3 and Donkey Kong were being played with the wii remotes at E3, so it seems not even Nintendo has any real ambitions with the Gamepad. Do you guys think the Wii U pad was a worthwhile investment, are you still excited for its potential? Maybe Nintendo should have released it as a bundled accessory once they found a defining piece of software to package it with (similar to the balance board+wii fit). A huge part of the Wii U's failure thus far is weak a software line up, so I'm not necessarily saying that the gamepad is to blame, but its removal could have allowed a number of alternatives for nintendo Nextgen effort:

Wii HD: Simply branded, the wii but with better graphics and media functionality (bluray). The console could have shipped with a tradition 360 styled gamepad (for 3rd party games like AC) and wiimote+. Marketing would have been easy and the price more approachable at $250 ($300 if nintendo wanted day1 profit).

Fail article.

Wii HD Part:

They think they could market an identical, but more powerfull system better than the WiiU? Lol :). At least the WiiU is different. Nintendo has just failed to show how different it really is.

Nintendo, unlike the writer, understood that the Wii sold because it was very different. It couldn't be redone with HD slapped on it. No way. And even in it's succes, it also failed to solve their 3rd support problem.

Nintendo Part:

More Lol. The N64 and the GC proved those ideas to be failures. How many times should Nintendo try it? Another two consoles?

In the wilderness we go alone with our new knowledge and strength.

The problem is not the gamepad itself but its predecessor which was perhaps the most accessible game controller ever made. It was practically impossible to make something better than the Wii Reremote (in terms of accessibility).

This is why I am still trying to understand why Nintendo did not make the Wii Remote + a wireless Nunchuck the default controllers of the Wii U.

I'm for it because I feel it has a lot of potential but apparently Nintendo is against it seeing as how they still haven't created a big-hit game that successfully proves why the market should embrace it.

I mean, my friends and I have brainstormed and come up with many great uses for this thing regarding games that are far beyond the typical "map in your hands" predictability that so many people limit it to. Why is it so hard for Nintendo?
