Forums - Sony Discussion - The Last of Us - Misleading AI presentation at E3 2012? [reddit.com; no spoilers]

"Here is the issue. Let me start off by saying that the game is amazing, but after reading all of these reviews I am becoming more and more frustrated because the people giving this game a 10/10 have over looked something extremely important.

The amazing "next gen" AI that Naughty Dog have been advertising can be seen in how the enemy reacts to the rest of his friends getting killed in this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=qguDnY0C_Sg#t=721s

Another example is how human these guys act in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbLOokeC3VU

So what is my problem you might ask? This crazy human like AI is almost non existent in the actual game. The AI is virtually no different than Uncharted. The guys will just run at you with their bare fists even if you are pointing a shotgun in their face.

The enemy NEVER tries to post up in a room and ambush you, they definitely NEVER run away and hide to preserve their own life, and they NEVER beg for their own life after being beaten to the ground and having a gun pointed in their face. So I have to ask, why was this issue completely overlooked by those who reviewed the game?

The only part of the AI that I have actually seen working in action is how they freak the hell out when you take one of their guys hostage, they rarely respond to hearing you try and fire an empty weapons, and they do sometimes flank you. Nearly everything we have seen so far concerning the human AI in this game has been completely misleading. It's apparent to me now that everything we saw at E3 was completely scripted and the AI we were shown at e3 is not the same that is in the full game..

I'm sorry if this seems like an over reaction, but this awesome human like AI was a massive selling point for me and I am beyond disappointed to see that none of it ever actually existed.

I just want to make this completely clear. I'm not saying that the AI is bad or completely retarded to where it ruins the game. I'm saying that what we were presented with at E3 is not what you are going to get when you pick this game up from the store."

I think this is an interesting read and may be worth a little debate. Enjoy^^

I told you the E3 demo was staged and heavily scripted, but everyone attacked me.

That was sad. So scripted that I want to puke. And ND are officially liars now.

facepalm

please tell me you are being sarcastic?

No. Did you see the video? It's all right there, every action is scripted for maximum cinematic effect.

-_-

read heavenly kings post

Well he is wrong. He is referring to AI when an action didn't happen due to AI but due to a simple script. Like enemy movement. The guy who flanked didn't do it thanks to AI, he did it only because our protagonist entered the room. There was a script, a trigger consisting of an invisible line on the floor that as soon as the protagonist crossed that line, the guy would go and position himself beside that door. Another script is when we close in on the door, when that script is triggered the guy will make the attacking animation trying to stab the player.

And Ellie is dumb as fuck. She has no AI in this whole demo, all her actions were due to scripts triggered by the movement of our protagonist.

Also you can't trust most gaming journalists to expose these flaws in reviews, because many of them are famous for not doing their jobs properly.

The E3 build was the PS4 version.

Nice one XD

A lot of E3 demos are fake. AC:Marines is a notable example.

Hell, even Brawl's for Nintendo was fake to a degree.

http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/profile/92109/nintendopie/ Nintendopie  Was obviously right and I was obviously wrong. I will forever be a lesser being than them. (6/16/13)

How can you be sure? trusting something some guy posted on the internet? I'm just saying wait until you play the game yourself. ;)

Oh right. At what difficulty level did that guy play? Because if he only played at the normal difficulty level, for all we know, the AI probably scales on the more difficult modes.

Isn't this the case with most big commercially games this generation? The fanboy always fall for it again and it won't stop I can tell you. The same happened with Bioshock Infinite.

So the same thing that happened with Infinite and most games these days. Nice to see devs can get away with this.

Not really surprised. AI is *extremely* expensive to compute and it has never been a real focus for devs, in my opinion. Ever since the skaarj in Unreal 1 dodged my shots I think there wasn't much change. Scripted stuff for AI is way more obvious than the tricks graphic-devs do to deceive your eyes.
