Forums - Sony Discussion - Digital Foundry: PS4 KILLZONE uses 3GB RAM! (CONFIRMED)

From the slides...

The game is not optimized yet.

The CPU jobs is way more threaded than PS3... PC eight-core games will be beneficied from that too.

Okay, but is that RAM towards anything innovative (never played Killzone)... or is it just going towards super big but ultimately super pointless 20 million polygon set pieces, million polygon characters (apparently Naughty Dog is looking into doing this), and super realistic looking guns with state of the art rendering? Cuz' I'll take a 4KB RAM game (or whatever the SNES was) like Super Mario RPG over a 3GB RAM game that is just another by the numbers military shooter any day.

Edit:  Just read the OP again... yup, 3 GB in graphics.  So now our military shooters will look super realistic.

Good for you big boy.

I read all the slides and what I found interesting...

  • Low-level optimizations
  • MSAA instead FXAA
  • Particules processing ported to Compute (GPU) instead CPU
  • There are Guerrira's secret sauce in real-time illumination

Overall what they think about the PS4.

So they will actually use MSAA? But they used FXAA in the demo, according to DF

Yes... they are using FXAA in de Demo but seem like they will change to MSAA... this slide:

I can be wrong but "no MSAA at the moment" seems like they will use for the final game.

They developed KZ with 4GB in mind(they didn't know about 8GB), and they'd probably already know that 1GB is designed to OS.

Using MSAA in the final version of the game, locked at 30FPS with no drops (Hopefully...) and textures as good, or even better (I reckon they'll find a way to make them better), than what we saw in the first demo?... yes please!

From the slideshow, it seems there is a lot more optimization to be done for the game for release, which should make it look a whole lot better.

Not surprised at all after their initial tweet surprised by the 8gb, this will end fantastically.

I personally prefer FXAA to MSAA.

You prefer an approximation of anti-aliasing to actual anti-aliasing?

I think he just prefers a game to a slideshow.

And here is why I Like GG more than the other Sony studios

They're not being (like Naughty Dog) "PS4 is PERFECT, I FUCKING LOVE SONY! , TEH POWER OF THE CELL , IT JUST FLIPPIN DEVELOPS ITSELF!"

They used "Spinlocks" probably because PS3 had a weird CPU structure (one Big core ,  lots of Small sub cores)  Spinlocking doesn't take much CPU resources , but it bugs out a lot since its well "Small" so if it bugs out there is no failsafe and it just stops, however with "mutexe" they're Fast and big, but are CPU hoggers,

However... they are WRONG about "spinlocking is not nice for multicore" actually it is made for that, I am guessing they meant its not nice incase they fail since if one of the threads fail the others kind of fail too, and the bugs are "Where is my head?!" kind of stuff.
